Shayari is the umbrella, not the form
This is where most confusion starts. Shayari is simply the Urdu and Hindi word for poetry — the whole art. A person who writes it is a shayar. It is not a length, not a structure and not a genre.
So "shayari vs ghazal" is not a comparison between two equivalent things, any more than "music vs raga" is. A ghazal is shayari. A nazm is shayari. A sher is shayari. The useful questions are the ones underneath: how many lines, held together how, and about one thing or several.
Sher — the two-line unit everything is built from
A sher is a couplet: two lines, each of which is called a misra. The first is the misra-e-oola, the second the misra-e-sani. What makes it a sher rather than just two lines is that it is complete — it does not need anything before or after it to make sense.
Structurally, the first line sets something up and the second one turns it. That turn is the entire craft, and it is why a good sher feels like a small trapdoor opening.

Two lines. No context required. That is a sher.
Ghazal — shers on a string
A ghazal is a sequence of shers, traditionally five to fifteen of them, bound by three shared things:
- Behr — the meter. Every sher in the ghazal runs on the same rhythmic pattern.
- Qafiya — the rhyming word that recurs near the end of the relevant lines.
- Radif — the exact phrase repeated after the qafiya, identical every time. In the Ghalib couplet above, the radif is nikle.
Two shers have names of their own. The matla is the opening couplet, where both lines carry the radif — that is how you know a ghazal has begun. The maqta is the closing couplet, and it traditionally contains the poet's takhallus, their pen name, which is how Ghalib signs himself inside his own poems.
The part that surprises people: the shers in a ghazal do not have to be about the same thing. One couplet can be about loss, the next about wine, the next about God. The unity is in the sound, not in the subject. That is exactly why individual shers travel so well on their own — they were always designed to stand alone.
Nazm — one idea, first line to last
A nazm is the other principle. It is a single poem about a single subject, developed continuously from beginning to end. It has no obligation to a shared radif or a fixed couplet structure; it can be metered and rhymed (paband nazm) or entirely free (azad nazm).
Faiz Ahmed Faiz's "Mujh se pehli si mohabbat mere mehboob na maang" is one of the most quoted nazms in the language — and notice what it does that a ghazal cannot: it argues. It starts somewhere, moves, and ends somewhere else. You cannot lift its fourth couplet out and forward it without losing the thing it was doing.
Ghazal is unity of sound. Nazm is unity of idea. Once you have that sentence, the whole taxonomy holds.
The words people mix in by mistake
- Rubai — a four-line verse with a set meter and an aa-b-a rhyme pattern. Not a "4 line shayari" in general; a specific form.
- Qata — two or more shers that must be read together because the meaning runs across them. The exception that proves the ghazal's independence rule.
- Kavita and geet — Hindi traditions, not Urdu ones. A kavita is a poem in the Hindi literary lineage; a geet is a song-poem. Neither is a ghazal, and mislabelling them is the most common error in shayari captions online.
- Kalaam — a poet's body of work, or a single piece of it, as in "Ghalib ka kalaam".
What you send on WhatsApp is a sher
Here is the practical payoff, and it is genuinely useful.
Almost every "shayari" that circulates on WhatsApp status, Instagram captions and forwarded JPEGs is a sher — one couplet. Not a ghazal, which would be twenty lines and would not fit; not a nazm, which would need to be read in one sitting.
Which tells you what to aim for when you write your own:
- Two lines. Stop. If you need a third, the second line has not turned properly yet.
- Set up in line one, turn in line two. The turn is the whole product.
- Make it stand alone. If it only works because of the message above it in the chat, it is a sentence, not a sher.
- Do not force a radif. A repeated end-phrase is a ghazal's requirement, not a couplet's. Chasing it in a two-line message is how people end up with a rhyme that means nothing.

The awkward truth about the sher is that its greatest strength — that it stands alone — is also why it disappears. A perfect couplet in a chat window is nine hundred messages up the scroll by Thursday.

The rule from the section above, applied. Take a flat statement and give the second line a turn.
Before (two lines, no sher): Tumhari yaad bahut aati hai, main tumhein bahut miss karta hoon.
After (a sher): Tumhari yaad aane ka koi waqt nahi hai — bas woh har us jagah aati hai jahan tum kabhi nahi aayi.
The first version says the same thing twice. The second sets up a rule in line one and breaks it in line two, and that break is what makes it a couplet instead of a sentence with a comma.
