Urdu, Hindi, and the language most Indian homes actually speak
On Eid morning in Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bhopal or old Delhi, almost nobody speaks "pure" Urdu or "pure" Hindi. They speak Hindustani — the shared language that Urdu and Hindi both grew from — and they write it in whichever script they learned. A Nani in Rampur may read Urdu script fluently; her grandson in Bengaluru reads Devanagari at best and types in Roman Urdu.
That's why this page gives every wish in more than one form:
- Urdu script (right to left) for elders, family groups and anyone who reads it — it carries weight the Roman version doesn't.
- Devanagari for Hindi readers and mixed families.
- Roman Urdu / Hinglish for WhatsApp, where nobody switches keyboards to reply.
A note on spelling: "Eid" and "Id" are both used in India; "Ramzan" is the common Indian and Urdu form of "Ramadan"; and "Bakrid", "Baqra Eid" and "Eid ul-Azha" all refer to Eid al-Adha. For English wishes and how to reply, see Eid Mubarak wishes.
عید مبارک — Urdu-script wishes (14)
The Urdu line copies together with its Roman Urdu version, so the recipient can read whichever they prefer. Lines 1–13 suit Eid al-Fitr; the last is a reply.
Eid couplets — original shayari in Urdu (8)
Two lines that land on the same sound, with a turn in the second. Written for this page, so they won't arrive from three cousins at once. (If you want to know what makes a sher a sher, our guide to sher, ghazal and nazm explains it.)
For Ammi, Abbu and the elders — in Urdu (6)
Elders who read Urdu script notice when you've taken the trouble to send it. Pair any of these with a call after the Eid prayer.
ईद मुबारक — Devanagari wishes for Hindi readers (12)
For mixed families, Hindi-medium friends, or a card. Keep the nukta (क़, ज़, ख़) if your keyboard allows — it's the difference between "qubool" and "kubool".
Roman Urdu for WhatsApp (10)
Romanized reads best on WhatsApp status — it fits the box, works on every phone, and the reply comes back in the same keyboard.
Bakrid / Eid ul-Azha wishes in Urdu (4)
For Eid al-Adha, about two months after Eid al-Fitr. These speak of qurbani, Hajj and sharing, so keep them for Bakrid.
Typing Urdu and Hindi on your phone
If you want to write your own line rather than copy one:
- Add the keyboard. On Gboard (Android) or iPhone keyboard settings, add Urdu and/or Hindi. Both support transliteration — type "eid mubarak" in Roman letters and pick the script suggestion.
- Check the direction. Urdu runs right to left. If you mix a name in English inside an Urdu line, the order can jump; put the English name at the very start or end.
- Expect two looks. Urdu is traditionally written in Nastaliq, the flowing slanted script. Some phones show it in a plainer Naskh-style font. Same words, different font — nobody will misread it.
When a forwarded Eid image isn't enough
Urdu and Devanagari both read as care, especially to elders. Put that care somewhere it lasts longer than a chat bubble. Lovely's Eid Mubarak template takes your lines in any script — Urdu, Hindi, Roman Urdu or English — and turns them into a small chaand raat.
It opens on rooftops and minarets under a sky going from apricot to teal. They drag a brass spyglass through the haze until the thin crescent locks in: "chaand mubarak!" Next, a string of fanoos lanterns — each one they tap glows and shows one of your duas, so the Urdu couplets above become three to six small lights instead of one long message. In the kitchen they add doodh, seviyan, cheeni, khajoor, mewa and zafran to a bowl of sheer khurma and stir. Last, an eidi envelope with a crescent seal; they break it and a note worth "₹ ∞" slides out with your photo, their name and your sign-off.
Every dua, the eidi note, both names and all three photos are yours to change. ₹59 one-time, one link, no app or account on their side. More ideas for distant family are in our Eid Mubarak page ideas.
"The Urdu pages are the ones grandparents ask to see again," says Lovely's founder. "They'll scroll past an image. They'll stop at their own language written by their own grandchild."
Make it yours: the one edit
Replace one general word with a family word. Urdu and Hindi both have a word for everyone — use it.
- "Aap ko" → "Phuphi jaan, aap ko"
- "Dastarkhwan" → "Nani ka dastarkhwan in Rampur"
- "Sheer khurma" → "your sheer khurma with extra chironji"
- "Door hain" → "Riyadh mein hain"
What NOT to do:
- Don't paste Urdu you can't read without checking it. If you're unsure, send the Roman Urdu line alone — it's still warm.
- Don't mix Eid al-Fitr and Bakrid lines. Qurbani and Hajj lines belong to Eid al-Adha; roza and Ramzan lines belong to Eid al-Fitr.
- Don't invent religious quotations. Original wishes and well-known greetings are safest; leave scripture to those who know it.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write Eid Mubarak in Urdu?
عید مبارک — read right to left, it is "Eid Mubarak". A fuller wish is "آپ کو اور آپ کے گھر والوں کو عید کی ڈھیروں خوشیاں مبارک ہوں", which means "Many Eid joys to you and your family". Every Urdu line on this page copies with its Roman Urdu version, so you can send both.
How do you write Eid Mubarak in Hindi?
ईद मुबारक, in Devanagari. Hindi and Urdu share most of their everyday vocabulary, so a wish like "ईद का चाँद आपके घर सुकून और बरकत लेकर आए" reads naturally to Hindi readers. Keep the nukta in words like क़बूल and ज़िंदगी if your keyboard allows it; it shows care.
What is a good Eid shayari in Urdu?
A couplet that ends both lines on the same sound and turns in the second line — "Chaand raat ki mehendi, subah ki namaz ka noor — Eid Mubarak tumhein, rahe har gham tum se door." The couplets on this page are original, so they will not arrive in the same chat three times from three cousins.
Why does Urdu look different on some phones?
Urdu is traditionally written in Nastaliq, a flowing, slanted style. Some phones display it in a plainer Naskh-style font instead, which is perfectly readable but looks more like Arabic print. The words are identical either way; only the font changes.
Can I put my Urdu or Hindi Eid wish on a page instead of a text?
Yes. Lovely's Eid Mubarak template lets you write every dua and the eidi note in your own words, in any script. They find the crescent with a spyglass, light lanterns that each show one dua, stir sheer khurma and open an eidi envelope with your photo. It is ₹59 one-time.
