TL;DR
54 original Holi shayari, written as proper two-line couplets — each one rhymes at the end of both lines, the way shayari is meant to. What makes Holi shayari different
Most Holi "shayari" online is a wish with a line break in it. Real shayari has two misre (lines) that land on the same sound, and a turn in the second line — the first line sets up the image, the second one surprises you with it. If you want the longer explanation of sher, ghazal and nazm, our guide to shayari forms has it.
Holi is a generous festival for this form because it already speaks in images: gulaal, phagun, the pichkari, a safed kurta that comes home green. Radha and Krishna's Holi in Braj has fed Hindi poetry for centuries, and the best Holi couplets still borrow that mood — playful, a little teasing, never heavy.
The lines below are written for 2026–27 phones, not for a mushaira. They use the old images with today's details: the terrace, the society WhatsApp group, the ziplock bag around your phone.

When the couplet deserves more than a forward
A shayari shared on status is gone in 24 hours. For the one person whose Holi you'd actually plan — the partner you couldn't colour this year, the sister in another city — Lovely's Happy Holi template turns your couplets into something they play.
It opens on their photo and the words "way too clean." They pick a colour from a five-bowl thali and tap to throw it. Then a terrace parapet with three to six water balloons — and every balloon they pop splashes open one of your lines, so five couplets become five little surprises instead of one wall of text. A smudge of gulaal comes next; they rub it off with a finger to find your photo together. At the end they hold down a pichkari to drench their own name, with your sign-off underneath.
You write every line and choose how many balloons appear. ₹59 one-time; they open it from a link, no app needed. For the occasion-by-occasion version of sending Holi to someone abroad, our Holi page for loved ones abroad goes deeper.
"Shayari reads best in small doses," says Lovely's founder. "Put one couplet behind one balloon and people stop scrolling. They wait for the next pop."
Make it yours: the one edit
Change one image in the first line to something from your own Holi. Keep the rhyme in the second line; it carries the shayari.
- "Terrace pe khade the hum" → "Nani ke aangan mein khade the hum"
- "Hostel ki chhat pe" → "Pune wale flat ki chhat pe"
- "Haathon mein gulaal" → "Haathon mein woh neela gulaal"
- "Pichle saal ka hara" → "2025 ka woh hara"
What NOT to do:
- Don't break the rhyme to fit a name in — put the name at the start instead: "Riya, rang barse, man harse…"
- Don't send romantic shayari to the family group by accident. Check the chat twice on Holi morning.
- Don't joke about forcing colour on someone. Shayari about teasing is fine; shayari about ignoring a "no" isn't, and skin-safe colour is part of the respect.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a Holi wish and Holi shayari?
A wish is a sentence; shayari is a couplet with a rhythm and a rhyme at the end of both lines. "Happy Holi, stay blessed" is a wish. "Gulaal tere gaalon pe kuch is tarah khila — jaise phagun ko aaj apna pehla rang mila" is shayari. Shayari takes ten more seconds to read and gets screenshotted far more often.
What is a romantic Holi shayari for a girlfriend or boyfriend?
Something that makes them the colour rather than the target — "Saare rang ek taraf, tera rang ek taraf — Holi bhi haar gayi, jab tu muskurayi meri taraf." Romantic Holi shayari works best when it names something from your Holi together, like the terrace, the first time you put gulaal on them, or the colour that never washed out.
Can I send Holi shayari to my parents or elders?
Yes, but choose the family and Devanagari sections, not the romantic or funny ones. Elders respond to shayari about togetherness, the home and blessings. Pair it with a phone call on Holi morning; the shayari opens the door and your voice does the rest.
How should I format Holi shayari for WhatsApp status?
Put each line of the couplet on its own row, keep the whole thing under about 120 characters so it does not get cut off, and use romanized Hindi unless your audience mostly reads Devanagari. A plain dark background with white text reads better on status than a busy gulaal photo.
Is there a way to send Holi shayari as more than a text?
Yes — put it on a page. Lovely's Happy Holi template hides your lines inside terrace water balloons they pop one by one, then reveals your photo under a layer of gulaal and ends with a pichkari aimed at their name. It is ₹59 one-time and opens from one link.
