Thank You, Maa

For the mom who says 'kuch mat lana'

Thank You, Maa

₹79

A pressure cooker she holds until three whistles, a steel dabba where every tier holds one line, a Maa-o-Meter that catches your old excuses, and a steamed-up plate she wipes clean to find her photo.

TL;DR

A website for your mom is a single private page that opens from a WhatsApp link — your lines, your photos, her at the end. Lovely's Thank You, Maa template does it as a kitchen story: she holds a button until a pressure cooker gives three whistles, lifts the tiers of a steel dabba to find one line in each katori, watches a "Maa-o-Meter" catch the excuses you used to tell her, and rubs a steamed-up plate to reveal her photo and "thank you, maa". No coding, about ten minutes, ₹79 one-time. Building it is easy. Writing it is the part this guide is for.

Why mothers are the hardest person to make something for

Every Indian mom has the same three defences, and they are all sincere.

  • "Kuch mat lana." She means it. Anything with a price tag gets a lecture about the price tag.
  • "Itna kyun kiya?" Anything elaborate makes her uncomfortable, because being fussed over is not a role she has been given much practice in.
  • "Achha hai, beta." Said about everything, including things she genuinely loved, so you never quite know what landed.

A page gets around all three. It costs less than a box of kaju katli, so there's no lecture. It's not elaborate in her hand — she taps a link and it plays. And it has a way of revealing the truth behind "achha hai": the link turns up a week later in her sister's chat, forwarded with no comment.

The real reason people stall, though, is not the format. It's that the words feel too big. You want to say "thank you for everything" and the sentence collapses under its own weight. The template is built to stop you from writing that sentence until the very end — and by then you've said it six smaller ways.

What's on the page: four scenes, one kitchen

The page is a short story set where she spent half her life, told in the order a weekday lunch actually happens.

  1. The pressure cooker. "Urgent from the kitchen. Maa, we need to talk." She presses and holds "turn up the gas"; the cooker shakes, steam puffs, and the gauge fills until the whistle blows — three times, because three whistles means the dal is ready. Every mom alive knows that count.
  2. The dabba. A steel tiffin carrier. She taps to lift each tier, and each katori — dal, rajma, palak, kheer, chawal — carries one of your lines. The defaults are lines like "'i'm not hungry' — you, giving me the last roti" and "your 'theek hai' has 47 meanings. i know 12." The bottom tier always holds a photo. You choose three to five tiers.
  3. The Maa-o-Meter. "Exhibit A. Accuracy 100%. Since the day I was born." A lie detector dial. She taps "tell maa" on an excuse you used to give her — "I've eaten, maa" — the needle wobbles, thinks, and slams into LIE, and the truth stamps underneath: "it was 4 chips and a coffee." Two to four excuses.
  4. The steam. A steel plate fogged over with steam. She rubs it with her finger, the fog clears, and her photo appears under "thank you, maa — for everything. even the chappal." Hearts float up. A button lets her serve it again.

Every line, every photo and the sign-off ("your favourite child (obviously)") are editable. Change "maa" to mummy, amma, aai or mom — the jokes still work, because the jokes are about the kitchen, not the word.

What to write in each scene (the actual work)

The template does the staging. You only have to fill four kinds of box, and each one has a rule.

The dabba lines — one specific act per katori. Not adjectives. Acts. "You packed extra for my friends, every single day" works because it happened. "You are so caring" does not, because it is a review. Good sources: what she did on exam mornings, what she did when you were sick, what she did with her own plate.

The excuses — use real ones. This is the funniest scene on the page if the excuses are yours. "5 minutes, almost home" (still in bed). "I'll sleep early today" (online at 3 am, she saw). Think about what you actually told her from the hostel in Pune or the PG in Gurugram. If she laughs at scene three, she'll cry at scene four, and that order is the point.

The photo under the steam — pick the one she doesn't have. Not the family portrait from a wedding. The one from your phone where she wasn't posing: asleep on the sofa, laughing at something off-camera, her hands in the atta. Moms are almost never in the photos, because moms are usually taking them.

The last line — now you're allowed to say it. After three scenes of small things, "thank you, maa" no longer collapses. Keep it short. If you need help with the words, emotional messages for your mother is sorted by the situation you're writing from, and thank you mom messages is sorted by what exactly you're thanking her for.

"The moms who say 'kuch mat lana' are the ones who replay these pages most," says Lovely's founder. "They aren't refusing a gift. They're refusing to be a burden. A link isn't a burden."

The steps, start to send

  1. Open the template from the Thank You, Maa info page and play the preview once yourself, on your phone, the way she will.
  2. Set the counts. Three to five dabba tiers, two to four excuses. Fewer and sharper beats more and padded — four tiers is the sweet spot.
  3. Rewrite every line. Tap any line on the preview to change it. Write in whatever you actually speak at home: Hindi, Marathi, Tamil words in English letters, Hinglish. She'll hear your voice in it.
  4. Swap the photos. The bottom dabba tier and the steam plate are the two that matter. Use the ones she doesn't have.
  5. Pay ₹79. One-time, by UPI, card or netbanking through Razorpay. No subscription.
  6. Send the link on WhatsApp with almost nothing attached: "maa, isko kholo. awaaz on." Then call her ten minutes later.

That last step is not optional. The page says the thing; the call lets her answer it.

Honest cost table

| Option | Cost | What she does with it | |---|---|---| | A WhatsApp message | ₹0 | Reads it, replies "god bless", forgets by dinner | | Flowers or a cake delivered | ₹600–₹1,500 | Says "itna kyun", enjoys it for a day | | A saree or a gadget | ₹1,500+ | Keeps it "for a function", tells you the price was too high | | Thank You, Maa page | ₹79 | Opens it again in a month, shows her sister | | Custom domain add-on | +₹100 | Optional — the private link works fine without it |

The page is not trying to replace the saree. If you were going to buy one anyway, send the link the night before, so the gift arrives with words already attached. If you're weighing the wider shelf, digital gifts for parents in India compares the honest alternatives, including when a courier or a visit beats anything on a screen.

When to send it (and when not to)

The obvious dates are her birthday and Mother's Day — the second Sunday of May, which is May 9 in 2027. But the dates that land hardest are the unofficial ones:

  • the night you get your first salary
  • the evening after you move cities for a job or college
  • the week after you've been ill and she nursed you over video call
  • a random Tuesday, from Bengaluru, for no reason she can work out

What NOT to do:

  • Don't make it about guilt. "Sorry I never call" lines turn a thank-you into an apology she now has to reassure you about. Leave them out.
  • Don't send it during her busiest hour. Not 7 am tiffin time, not when guests are over. Late evening, after the kitchen closes.
  • Don't over-explain the link. "Open this, it's a website I made using a template, you have to hold the button..." She'll figure it out. The button says what to do.
  • Don't skip the call. Covered above. Still the most common mistake.

Who this is wrong for

If your mom does not use a smartphone on her own, or the relationship is in a hard place where a joke about the chappal would land wrong, a page is the wrong tool. Write a letter instead — how to write a letter to your parents teaches a four-part structure that works on paper — or simply visit. And if it's both of them you want to thank, the dad version of this guide is a newspaper rather than a kitchen, and the two pages make a pair.

If your mom lives abroad, or you do, the page matters more, not less: pages for parents abroad covers timing across time zones.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a website for my mom without coding?

Start from a template rather than a blank site builder. On Lovely you open the Thank You, Maa template, tap any line on the preview to rewrite it, swap the photos for your own and publish. It takes about ten minutes, and you get a private link you can send her on WhatsApp.

What should I write on a website for my mom?

Small, specific things she will recognise, not big words about sacrifice. The lie she always caught, the extra roti she packed for your friends, what her 'theek hai' really means. One true detail per line does more than a paragraph about how much she has done for you.

How much does a website for my mom cost?

The Thank You, Maa template costs ₹79 one-time, paid by UPI, card or netbanking. Hosting is included and there is no subscription. A custom domain is an optional ₹100 add-on that most people skip.

Will my mom be able to open it on her phone?

Yes. It is an ordinary web page that opens from a WhatsApp link in any phone browser. There is no app to install and no account to create, and every interaction is a single tap, hold or rub, so it works for a mom who only uses WhatsApp and YouTube.

Is a website a good gift for a mom who says don't waste money?

It is one of the few that survives that objection, because it costs less than a box of mithai and she cannot return it. Pair it with a phone call, not instead of one — the page says what you could not say out loud, the call lets her react to it.
