A Website for My Dad: Make Him a Newspaper (₹79)

How to make a website for your dad without code — a newspaper he unfolds, headlines about him, a dad joke corner, the honest ₹79 cost and when to send it.

Thank You, Papa

A special-edition newspaper about him: he unfolds the front page, turns through sports, business and weather pages written about his life, flips the dad-joke answers, then holds a button to run the press on 'Thank you, Papa.'

TL;DR

A website for your dad is a private page he opens from a WhatsApp link. Lovely's Thank You, Papa template makes it a newspaper — the one format every Indian father already reads, every morning, with chai. He unfolds a special-edition front page ("Local man still best dad, sources confirm"), turns through three to five inside pages written about his life, flips the answers in a Dad Joke Corner, and holds a button to run the printing press on a late edition that reads "Thank you, Papa." No code, about ten minutes, ₹79 one-time. The hard part isn't the build. It's writing headlines about a man who has never once let you thank him. This guide is about that.

Why dads are hard to thank (and why a newspaper works)

Indian fathers have a well-documented technique for receiving affection: deflect, then change the subject to logistics. "Haan haan, theek hai. Train kitne baje ki hai?" Say "I love you, Papa" on a call and there's a pause long enough to hear the ceiling fan.

It isn't coldness. Most dads of a certain generation were never given the vocabulary — they show it by fixing things, paying for things and waiting at stations. A direct emotional message asks them to respond in a register they don't speak.

A newspaper sidesteps that. It doesn't ask him to feel anything on cue. It reports. "Man finishes 12-hour shift, still drives kid to tuition" is a fact. He can read it, snort, and say "kya bakwaas hai" — and then read it again when nobody's looking. Praise phrased as journalism is praise he can accept.

What's in The Papa Times

Four scenes, in the order of a morning paper:

  1. The front page. It opens on "Papa, your paper's here. You read it every morning. This one's about you." He taps "read today's paper" and a folded broadsheet opens out: The Papa Times, "vol. 1 · est. the day you became papa", price "one hug". Headline: "Local man still best dad, sources confirm." There's a photo with a caption and a sidebar ("'Reached safely? Call me.' Our reporter has received this message every trip since 2009").
  2. The inside pages. Three to five pages, each a section of the paper, each with a headline, a photo or drawing and one honest line underneath. The defaults:
    • Sports — "Man runs 2 km behind cycle, lets go at exactly the right moment."
    • Business — "Wallet mysteriously empties every school year. Owner says nothing."
    • Weather — "Forecast: quiet, steady, always there. 100% chance of papa."
    • Technology — "Area dad fixes wifi, fan, scooter and my life. Mostly with tape."
    • Local news — "Man finishes 12-hour shift, still drives kid to tuition."
  3. The Dad Joke Corner. Page 7, puzzles and groans. Three jokes with the answers printed upside down; he taps each one to flip it. "Papa, I'm hungry." → "Hi Hungry, I'm Papa." You can switch this whole page off if your dad isn't a joke dad.
  4. Stop the press. A blank late edition. He presses and holds "hold to run the press," a roller sweeps across, and the extra edition prints: "Extra! Extra! Thank you, Papa." with his photo, a caption ("Papa (left), not crying. 'Something in my eye,' he said.") and your sign-off as chief reporter since birth.

Every headline, caption, photo and byline is editable.

How to write headlines about your father

The template's tone is a small-town newspaper reporting on one very ordinary, very heroic man. Keep that voice and you'll find the writing is easier than a letter.

The headline: third person, past tense, a little deadpan. "Local man," "area dad," "sources confirm." The humour comes from treating household facts like breaking news.

The line underneath: first person, the real thing. This is where you say what the headline means to you. Short. "You never once told us it was hard. We know now."

A worked example — five pages for a dad in Nagpur who ran a medical shop for thirty years:

  • Business: "Shop opens at 8 am for 11,000 consecutive days. Owner calls it 'nothing.'" → "I didn't understand discipline until I tried to wake up at 7 once."
  • Sports: "Father teaches daughter to drive, survives." → "You only shouted once. I deserved it."
  • Weather: "Same blue shirt sighted every Sunday since 1998." → "Some things don't need to change. You're one of them."
  • Technology: "Man forwards same good-morning image to 47 contacts daily." → "I complain. I'd miss it."
  • Local news: "Father waits at Nagpur station for 3 hours, says train was 'on time.'" → "It wasn't. You were."

"Dads won't accept a compliment, but they'll accept a correction to the record," says Lovely's founder. "The newspaper is a correction. It finally gets the facts right."

If you want lines rather than headlines, emotional messages for your father and thank you papa messages are both sorted by situation, and they drop straight into the line under each headline.

The steps, start to send

  1. Open the template from Thank You, Papa info page and read the preview through once on your phone.
  2. Choose three to five pages. Five is a full paper. Three is tighter and often better.
  3. Decide on the Dad Joke Corner. Keep it for a joke dad; switch it off for a quiet one.
  4. Rewrite every headline and line. Tap to edit. Hinglish headlines work beautifully: "Papa ne phir se kaha 'main thaka nahi hoon.' Experts unconvinced."
  5. Swap the photos. The front page and the final extra edition matter most. Use an old photo — him holding you, him on the scooter, him asleep in front of the news.
  6. Pay ₹79 by UPI, card or netbanking. One-time.
  7. Send the link on WhatsApp in the morning, when he'd normally be reading the paper: "Papa, aaj ka akhbaar."

What it costs, honestly

| Option | Cost | Typical dad reaction | |---|---|---| | A WhatsApp message | ₹0 | A thumbs-up, eight hours later | | A shirt or a watch | ₹1,000–₹5,000 | "Itna mehenga kyun liya" | | A gadget | ₹2,000+ | Stays in the box "for later" | | The Papa Times | ₹79 | Reads it. Re-reads it. Shows his friend at the morning walk | | Custom domain add-on | +₹100 | Optional |

If you're weighing a page against a physical gift, digital gifts for parents in India compares the options honestly — including when a visit beats everything else on the list.

When to send it

  • Father's Day — the third Sunday of June; June 20 in 2027. The Father's Day India guide covers the occasion in depth.
  • His birthday, sent at breakfast rather than midnight. Dads don't do midnight.
  • His retirement, when a newspaper about thirty years of work feels exactly right. Retirement wishes for a father in Hindi has lines to fill the pages.
  • Your first salary, with the Business page rewritten: "Kid finally pays for dinner. Father insists on paying anyway."
  • Any morning. The front page says "special edition · today only." It doesn't need a date.

What NOT to do

  • Don't make it all tears. The template works because it's funny first. If every headline is about his sacrifices, he'll close it at page two.
  • Don't roast him too hard. Teasing about the forwarded good-morning images is affectionate. Teasing about his weight or his business failing is not.
  • Don't explain it on the phone first. Send the link and let the front page do the explaining.
  • Don't expect a big reply. You'll probably get "very nice beta" and a thumbs-up. That's the review. The real one is when your mother tells you he showed it to everyone at the shop.

If your mother deserves her own page too, a website for my mom is the matching guide — a kitchen story with a pressure cooker and a steel dabba. And if your dad would genuinely rather have a letter, how to write a letter to your parents has the structure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a website for my dad without coding?

Start from a template instead of a website builder. On Lovely you open Thank You, Papa template, tap any headline or caption on the preview to rewrite it, swap the photos, choose how many pages the paper has and publish. It takes about ten minutes and you get a private link to send him.

What should I write on a website for my dad?

Write it like a newspaper: short, factual headlines about things he did, with one honest line underneath. 'Man runs 2 km behind cycle, lets go at exactly the right moment' followed by 'I didn't even notice you'd let go. That was the whole point.' Dads accept praise far more easily when it is phrased as reporting.

How much does a website for my dad cost?

Thank You, Papa template costs ₹79 one-time, paid by UPI, card or netbanking. Hosting is included and there is no subscription. A custom domain is an optional ₹100 add-on.

My dad isn't good with phones. Will he manage?

Almost certainly. It opens from a WhatsApp link in his phone's browser with nothing to install. Each screen has one big button that says what to do — read today's paper, turn the page, hold to run the press — so there is nothing to work out.

What occasions is a dad website good for?

Father's Day, his birthday and his retirement are the obvious ones. The ones that land hardest are unofficial: your first salary, the week you move out, or the day after he drops you at the station and says nothing. A newspaper suits any day because it is dated today.
