Naya saal, nav varsh, aur kaunsa naya saal?
A small thing worth knowing before you send a Hindi new year wish: India has several new years. January 1 is the one the whole country stays up for — the countdown on TV, fireworks over Marine Drive, the crowd at Connaught Place, the terrace party in Lucknow. But many Hindu families also mark their own: Chaitra Shukla Pratipada in spring (Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra), and for many Gujarati families, the day after Diwali. Elders in particular sometimes gently point this out.
That doesn't make a January 1 wish wrong. It just means the formal Devanagari lines below — "nav varsh ki hardik shubhkamnayein" — are the ones that work any time, and the Hinglish lines are firmly January 1.
Which script, when:
- Devanagari for parents, grandparents, relatives, and anything printed. The script itself reads as respect.
- Hinglish (romanized) for friends, partners and WhatsApp status — it renders on every phone and fits the crop.

When a wish needs a countdown
A Hindi wish to Maa at 9 am on January 1 is perfect as it is. But for the one person you'd count down with if you were in the same room, the Happy New Year template does the countdown for you — and every word on it can be in Hindi or Hinglish.
It starts on a split-flap board that flips from 10 to zero; they have to tap at exactly zero, and the page tells them whether they were perfect, early or late. Then a night sky they tap to light fireworks — each firework reveals one wish you wrote (three to six; "Is saal Kasol pakka" works beautifully here). Then a printer prints your year as a receipt — "2026, itemised", "maggi at 2am ×47", a photo at the bottom — which they tear off. Then a "2027, together" list of resolutions they tick and sign, and a finale with their name and two photos, with fireworks on every tap.
It's written for a couple by default, but the receipt works wonderfully for a best friend or a sibling, and a Hindi resolutions list for parents ("Papa: walk daily, Maa: no fasting on doctor's orders") is the kind of thing that gets screenshotted to every relative. ₹79 one-time, about ten minutes, shared as a private link or QR code.
"Hindi pages are the ones that travel furthest in a family — they get forwarded to the masi in another city," says Lovely's founder.
Make it yours: the one edit
Add one real detail — a name, a place, a habit.
- "Naya saal aapki muskaan ke naam" → "Naya saal aapki muskaan aur aapke ghutne ke dard ke ilaaj ke naam"
- "Is saal trip pakka" → "Is saal Jibhi pakka, 14 Feb wale weekend"
- "Purane yaar" → "Hostel ke Room 214 wale yaar"
- "Is saal ek hi chhat ke neeche" → "Is saal Holi pe sab Indore mein"
What NOT to do: don't send a shayari to a group of thirty relatives with no name in it — it reads as a forward. Put one name or one detail in, or send a plain wish.
Frequently asked questions
How do you say Happy New Year in Hindi?
The most common forms are "Naya saal mubarak ho" and the more formal "Nav varsh ki hardik shubhkamnayein" (नव वर्ष की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं). For elders, "Aapko naye saal ki dher saari shubhkamnayein" is warm and respectful; with friends, plain "Happy New Year yaar" in Hinglish is perfectly natural.
What is a good new year wish in Hindi for parents?
One that thanks them for the year as well as wishing them for the next — "Maa-Papa, beete saal ke har din ke liye shukriya. Naya saal aapki sehat aur muskaan ke naam." Parents respond to gratitude more than to grand wishes, and health is the wish they actually care about.
Should I write new year wishes in Devanagari or Hinglish?
Devanagari for elders, cards and anything formal — the script itself reads as respect. Hinglish (romanized) for friends, partners and WhatsApp status, because it renders on every phone and fits the status crop. Every Devanagari line here copies with its romanized version attached.
Is January 1 the Hindu new year?
No. January 1 is the calendar new year that India celebrates widely, but many Hindu communities mark their own new year — Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa, Ugadi) in spring, and for many Gujarati families the day after Diwali. These wishes are written for January 1, but most of the Devanagari lines work for any new year.
Can I make a new year page in Hindi?
Yes. Every line in Lovely's Happy New Year template is editable, so you can write the fireworks wishes, the year-in-review receipt and the resolutions in Hindi or Hinglish. It starts with a countdown they tap at zero and costs ₹79 one-time.
