TL;DR
58 original happy new year wishes for 2027, sorted by moment and person: short midnight texts, heartfelt lines, funny wishes, office-safe wishes, Hindi (Devanagari) and Hinglish lines, and a few longer paragraphs. New Year's Eve 2026 is Thursday, December 31, so midnight lands on Friday, January 1, 2027. Tap to copy, then make the one edit at the bottom so it can't be mistaken for a forward.
The midnight flood, and how to stand out in it
Every year at 12:00 the same thing happens: the network chokes, your phone buzzes forty times, and thirty-eight of those messages are the same sparkler GIF. Whatever you send at midnight is competing with all of it.
The fix is not a longer message. It's a more specific one. A new year wish works when it carries one hope that only fits that person — the job they're waiting on, the trip you keep planning, the habit they swore off. The lines below are written as frames for exactly that: copy, swap one noun, send.
Two timing notes, from watching how Indian group chats actually behave on December 31:
- Close people get the midnight text. Partner, best friend, siblings. If you're at a party in Goa or on a terrace in Indore, send it at 11:58 — it'll arrive at 12:00.
- Everyone else gets the morning. Office groups, elders, the building society. Nobody wants to be woken up by "HNY" from the society secretary.
If you're wishing a partner, there's a separate bank of new year messages for girlfriend and boyfriend. For a full Hindi bank, see new year wishes in Hindi.

When a wish isn't enough
At midnight, a text is a text. If there's one person you want to actually feel the countdown with — even from another city — the Happy New Year template turns it into something they play.
It opens on a split-flap board: "2026 is leaving. count it out with me." They start the countdown and the board flips from 10 to zero, and they have to tap "happy new year!" exactly at zero — the page tells them if they were perfect ("like us"), early ("so eager. cute.") or late ("as always. i waited."). Then the sky: they tap to light fireworks, and each one carries a wish you wrote — three to six of them. Next, a little printer spits out "2026, itemised" — a thermal receipt from "us & co." with lines like "maggi at 2am ×47" and "times you were right ×2", a photo printed at the bottom, and "no returns. no exchanges." They tear it off. Then a "2027, together" list of resolutions they tick and sign, and a finale with their name, two photos and more fireworks on every tap.
The default copy is written for a couple, but every line, number and photo is editable, so it works for a best friend (the receipt is perfect for friendships), a sibling, or a whole friend group. It's ₹79 one-time, takes about ten minutes, and goes out as a private link and QR code. They don't need to open it at midnight — the countdown starts when they tap.
"The receipt is the part people screenshot," says Lovely's founder. "Everyone has a 'maggi at 2am ×47' with someone."
Make it yours: the one edit
Swap one generic noun for one specific one.
- "May 2027 give you the weekend you postpone" → "May 2027 give you the Rishikesh weekend you've postponed since college"
- "Here's to good news" → "Here's to the offer letter you're waiting on"
- "Same favourite people" → "Same favourite people, same Saturday chai at Irani café"
- "Thank you for this year" → "Thank you for June, when you drove me to the hospital at 3 am"
What NOT to do:
- Don't send a long paragraph to a group. One line, one detail.
- Don't send "HNY" alone. It's two seconds slower to type the actual words and it shows.
- Don't wish elders at 12:01 am. Morning of January 1.
- Don't paste the same wish to everyone in your contacts — people in the same circle compare.
- Don't attach a resolution lecture ("this year please start exercising"). Wish them; don't assign them.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good short happy new year wish?
One that carries one specific hope instead of a list of all of them — "Happy New Year. May 2027 finally give you the weekend you keep postponing." Short wishes sent at midnight get read in a flood of identical ones; a single detail is what makes yours stand out.
When should I send new year wishes?
For the people closest to you, at or just after midnight on December 31 — in 2026 that's Thursday night into Friday, January 1, 2027. For groups, colleagues and elders, the morning of January 1 is better; messages sent at 12:00 exactly often arrive late anyway because networks are overloaded.
What is a new year wish for colleagues?
Warm, short and about the work you shared without being about work — "Happy New Year to the team that made 2026 bearable. Here's to fewer fire drills in 2027." Keep it safe for a group chat and avoid anything you wouldn't say in a meeting.
Can I send new year wishes in Hindi?
Yes — "Naye saal ki hardik shubhkamnayein" is the classic for elders, and Hinglish lines work for friends. Romanized text reads best on WhatsApp status. For a full bank, see our new year wishes in Hindi post with Devanagari and Hinglish lines.
What can I send instead of a forwarded new year image?
A page with an actual countdown. Lovely's Happy New Year template starts with a flip-board countdown they tap at zero, fireworks that each carry a wish, a printed receipt of your year together and a resolutions list you both sign — ₹79 one-time, shared as a private link.
