The box has rules, and almost nobody writes for them
Every other status shayari page hands you a thousand lines and lets you find out the hard way which ones get cut. So here is the thing that page should have said first.
A WhatsApp status holds up to 700 characters and shows about two lines of them. Past the second screen line WhatsApp adds a "read more", and the honest truth is that hardly anyone taps it. So the real budget is not 700 characters — it is roughly 60–70 roman characters, fewer on a small screen, fewer again on a coloured-background status where the font is much larger.
Devanagari costs more of that budget than roman does. Not in bytes — in width. Conjuncts and the matras stacked above and below the line take more horizontal room per idea than the same sentence spelled in roman. A couplet that sits comfortably as "Waqt badla, aadat nahi" runs closer to the edge as "वक़्त बदला, आदत नहीं". On a handful of older Android builds those conjuncts also render with broken spacing inside status text fields, and one bad glyph makes a careful line look careless.
Hence the rule this whole page is built on: roman for the status, Devanagari for the message you actually send that person. Both versions sit on every line below, and tapping copies both, newline-joined — delete whichever one you do not need.

Two clauses that still fit one screen (15)
These run 47–62 characters in roman — they use both visible lines and stop before the "read more". In Devanagari a few will brush the edge, which is exactly why the roman is the status version.

These are the long ones. They truncate in a status box and they are not meant for it. Send them as a message, put them on a card, or use one as the opening line of something bigger.
Roman one-liners for the coloured-background status (16)
The coloured-background status uses a much larger font, so the visible budget drops sharply. Every line here is under 32 characters. These are written for that box specifically — no Devanagari, because at that font size a broken conjunct is unmissable.
When the status is aimed at one person (12)
The most common reason anyone posts a status shayari at all: there is one contact who will read it and know. These are written so everyone else reads a mood and that one person reads a message. If that one person is a boyfriend, the aimed-at-him bank is love shayari for boyfriend in Hindi.
What not to put on a status
Four things that make an otherwise good line land badly. None of them is about grammar.
- A running score. A line that adds up who cared less is not shayari, it is an invoice, and the person it is meant for reads it as a summons. Post the mood, never the ledger.
- A full name. An initial is warmer and far less awkward. A name turns a status into a screenshot that travels.
- Four in a week. Status is a small room. One line, twenty-four hours, then let it go. If there is more to say than that, the box is the wrong box.
- A famous couplet passed off as yours. If you post Ghalib or Gulzar, say so in the line. Three characters of attribution buy back all the credibility a borrowed line would otherwise cost.
When 24 hours is the wrong container
A status is a whisper in a crowded room. It works when you want the room to hear a mood. It fails, quietly, when the whole point was one person — because they either miss it, or see it and cannot answer it without making it a whole thing.
