Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and which wish fits which
There are two Eids, and a good wish knows which one it's for.
- Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting. It begins when the new crescent is sighted — the evening called chaand raat — and it's the Eid of sheer khurma, sevaiyan, new clothes and eidi for the children. Wishes for it often acknowledge the month that came before: the fasting, the patience, the long evenings of iftar.
- Eid al-Adha, often called Bakrid or Eid ul-Azha in India, comes about two months later and is linked to the Hajj and the remembrance of sacrifice. Wishes lean on gratitude, generosity and sharing.
"Eid Mubarak" — blessed Eid — works for both. The sections below mark which lines suit which. For how Eid morning looks across Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Kerala, and page ideas for distant family, see our Eid Mubarak page ideas.
Short Eid Mubarak wishes (12)
For a quick text or a status. Work for both Eids unless noted.
For family and elders (10)
Respect first, warmth second, humour only if that's how your family talks. Ammi, Abbu, Nani, Dadi, Phuphi, Khala — use the name they're called at home.
For your partner (8)
For a husband, wife, fiancé or fiancée — and especially your first Eid together.
Chaand raat wishes (6)
For the evening the moon is sighted — Eid al-Fitr only. These go out on the roof, phone in one hand, mehendi drying on the other.
Hindustani, Devanagari and Urdu wishes (10)
Hindustani — the shared Hindi-Urdu of Indian homes — is how many Indian families actually wish each other. Romanized reads best on WhatsApp; the Devanagari or Urdu script line copies along with it. For a full bank in both scripts, see Eid Mubarak wishes in Urdu and Hindi.
Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) wishes (8)
For Eid al-Adha, about two months after Eid al-Fitr. These lean on gratitude, sharing and generosity rather than the end of a fast.
For colleagues and the office group (8)
Professional, warm, and easy to send whether or not you celebrate.
When a forwarded image isn't enough
By noon on Eid, every phone holds the same crescent image forty times. For one person — a spouse on your first Eid together, a sibling in Riyadh, Ammi when you can't fly home — there's something closer to being there.
Lovely's Eid Mubarak template starts on chaand raat. Rooftops, minarets, everyone upstairs looking for the moon. They drag a brass spyglass across the haze until the thin crescent locks in and the screen says "chaand mubarak!" Then a string of lanterns: every lantern they tap glows and shows one of your duas — the defaults range from "may your biryani always have the aloo" to "may your heart stay exactly this soft." In the kitchen they add doodh, seviyan, cheeni, khajoor, mewa and zafran to a bowl of sheer khurma and stir it until it steams. Last, an eidi envelope with a crescent seal. They break it, and a note worth "₹ ∞" slides out with your photo, their name and your message.
You write every dua, the eidi note and both names, swap in three photos, and choose three to six lanterns. It costs ₹59 one-time and opens from one link, no app or account needed. It's built around Eid al-Fitr's moon and sheer khurma, but rewrite the kitchen lines and duas and it works for Bakrid too.
"Eid is about being at the same table," says Lovely's founder. "When you can't be, the next best thing is a page where they still get to find the moon first."
Make it yours: the one edit
Add one real detail — a dish, a place or a habit. Once per wish.
- "Nothing tastes like Eid" → "Nothing tastes like Eid until your sheer khurma with extra chironji is on the table"
- "I'm far this Eid" → "I'm in Dubai this Eid, two and a half hours behind your kitchen"
- "Save me a plate" → "Save me two shami kebabs from the Aminabad shop"
- "Our first Eid together" → "Our first Eid together, and your Ammi already likes me more than you"
What NOT to do:
- Don't send "Happy Ramadan" on Eid. Ramadan is the month of fasting; Eid is the celebration after it. "Ramadan Mubarak" belongs at the start of the month.
- Don't guess religious details. If you're unsure, keep it to warmth, family and food — that's always right.
- Don't send at fajr. Unless you know they're up, wait until after the Eid prayer; the morning is busy and the phone is in a pocket.
How to reply to Eid Mubarak
- Khair Mubarak — the traditional reply, returning the blessing.
- Aapko bhi Eid Mubarak / Eid Mubarak to you too — always correct.
- Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum — a traditional phrase meaning "May Allah accept it from us and from you."
For the gang and the friend abroad, see Eid Mubarak messages for friends. And if someone close is spending Eid alone in a new city, a message for someone who is homesick covers that ache.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Eid Mubarak wish?
One that is warm, short and a little specific — "Eid Mubarak! May your home be full, your dastarkhwan crowded and your heart light." Mention one real thing, like the sheer khurma, a family tradition or the city they are in, and the wish stops sounding forwarded. Elders appreciate a blessing; friends appreciate a bit of humour.
How do you reply to Eid Mubarak?
The traditional reply is "Khair Mubarak", which returns the blessing. "Aapko bhi Eid Mubarak" or "Eid Mubarak to you and your family too" are equally warm. Some people also use the traditional phrase "Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum", meaning "May Allah accept it from us and from you".
When is Eid in 2027?
Eid al-Fitr 2027 is expected around March 9 or 10 in India, depending on the moon sighting on chaand raat — the exact date is confirmed only the evening before. Eid al-Adha (Bakrid) 2027 is expected in mid-May. Both follow the lunar Islamic calendar, so they move about 11 days earlier each year.
Can non-Muslims wish Eid Mubarak?
Yes, and most Muslim friends and colleagues are genuinely happy to receive it. "Eid Mubarak! Hope your day is full of family, food and rest after a long month" is perfect. Avoid religious claims you are not sure of, and ask about their day rather than lecturing about the festival.
What can I send instead of an Eid Mubarak image?
A page with your own words. Lovely's Eid Mubarak template opens on chaand raat with a spyglass to find the crescent, then lanterns that each light one of your duas, a bowl of sheer khurma they stir, and an eidi envelope worth "₹ ∞" with your photo inside. It costs ₹59 one-time.
