The wording, and somewhere to put it

TL;DR

A save the date needs only four things: your names, the date, the city, and "invitation to follow." Below are fifty-six wording examples, sorted by tone — classic, from the parents, casual, destination, WhatsApp-short, blessing openers for different traditions, Hinglish and Devanagari — plus a checklist of what to include, what to leave out, and when to send. Every example is tap-to-copy; swap in your names and date. For the message you send with the full invitation later, see wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp.

What a save the date is (and isn't)

A save the date is a heads-up, not an invitation. It tells people the date before they book their December trip to Goa or their cousin's wedding in Jaipur on the same weekend. It doesn't need the function schedule, the dress code, the RSVP form or the map. Those come with the invitation.

Indian weddings make the save the date more important, not less. The season is crowded — November to February in most of the country — and guests juggle several weddings, leave approvals and flight prices. A clear date four to six months out is a kindness.

Include:

  1. Both names (or "the wedding of our daughter/son" if parents are sending)
  2. The date — written with the month as a word, so nobody misreads 12/11 as 11 December
  3. The city, and the venue if it's confirmed
  4. "Formal invitation to follow" or similar

Leave out: gift or shagun information, the full guest-list rules, unconfirmed venues, and anything you might have to retract.

Classic and formal (8)

For printed cards, elders, and anyone who'd be surprised by a joke.

From the parents (8)

Traditional, respectful wording for families who host — and the version most elders will forward.

Casual and fun (8)

For friends, colleagues and the group chat that's been asking "kab?" for three years.

Destination weddings (6)

Send these six to eight months ahead so guests can plan travel and leave.

Short enough for a WhatsApp preview (6)

When the save the date is the message itself, these fit above the fold.

Blessing openers (6)

Many Indian families open with a blessing line. Pick the one that fits your tradition and place it above the names.

Hinglish (6)

Romanized Hinglish is perfect for the friends' group and status — warm, and readable on every phone.

देवनागरी — for the family message (8)

For elders, the family group and printed cards. Each line copies with its romanized version.

When the wording needs somewhere beautiful to live

The words above work in a text. If you want guests to actually remember the date, the Save the Date Wedding Invite template gives them an entrance. It opens on two carved palace doors under a marigold toran — "you're invited, to a wedding" — and guests knock twice to swing them open onto "शुभ विवाह" and your names. Inside: your names in a jharokha window with a photo, the date and the venue. Then a swipe through the functions — mehendi, haldi, sangeet, the pheras, reception, after-party — each in its own colour with time, place and a one-line vibe ("wear old clothes. trust us."). You show between two and six. It ends with a live countdown to the wedding day, a line in Devanagari ("आपका इंतज़ार रहेगा"), your families' names, and a "we'll be there!" button that rains marigolds. ₹99 once.

Two practical notes. First, the countdown reads the date line, so write the month as a word ("12 December 2026") — exactly the habit recommended above. Second, the "we'll be there!" button is a celebration, not a headcount; collect real RSVPs the usual way, on WhatsApp or a call.

"A save the date competes with every other wedding in the guest's phone that season," says Lovely's founder. "Knocking on a door is the one thing nobody else's invitation asks them to do. They remember yours."

For the full comparison of digital invites, see digital wedding invitation websites. If you're still at the engagement stage, engagement captions for Instagram and the engagement announcement page guide come first.

When to send it

  • City or local wedding: four to six months ahead.
  • Destination wedding, or many outstation guests: six to eight months ahead.
  • Peak-season dates (November–February, or an auspicious muhurat many families share): send even earlier.
  • Then: the formal invitation about six to eight weeks before, and a reminder a week out.

What NOT to do

  • Don't send a save the date to someone you won't invite. It's a promise.
  • Don't include the venue if it isn't booked. Changing it later creates confusion.
  • Don't write the date only in numbers. 06/11 means June to some guests and November to others.
  • Don't put shagun or gift details on a save the date. That belongs nowhere, honestly, but certainly not here.
  • Don't send it only in the family group. Elders appreciate a personal message or a call.

Frequently asked questions

What should a save the date say?

Four things: your names, the wedding date, the city (or venue if it is confirmed), and a line saying a formal invitation will follow. "Riya and Arjun are getting married — 12 December 2026, Udaipur. Invitation to follow." Everything else, including the full function schedule, can wait for the invite.

How early should we send a save the date?

Four to six months before the wedding for a local or city wedding, and six to eight months for a destination wedding or one where many guests will fly in. Indian wedding season dates fill up fast, so earlier is kinder to guests who need leave and tickets.

Can parents send the save the date in an Indian wedding?

Yes, and in many families they do. Wording like "Mr and Mrs Sharma request you to save the date for the wedding of their daughter Riya with Arjun" is traditional and reads respectfully to elders. Couples often send a casual version to friends and let parents send the formal one.

Is it okay to send a save the date on WhatsApp?

Yes — for most Indian weddings it is now the main channel. Send it personally rather than only in a group, add one line in your own words, and follow up closer to the date with the full invitation. Elders may still appreciate a call as well.

What is a digital save the date?

A link instead of a card. Lovely's Save the Date Wedding Invite template opens on carved palace doors under a marigold toran that guests knock to open, shows your names, date and venue, lets them swipe through each function, and runs a live countdown. ₹99 one-time.
