The Diwali card that isn't a forward

Happy Diwali

₹79

A Diwali card in five scenes: a carved door under a marigold toran, diyas that reveal your lines, a rangoli, a mithai box, and their name in phuljhadi sparks.

TL;DR

An online Diwali greeting card comes in three kinds: a static image you design, an animated e-card from a portal, or an interactive page. Static and portal cards are free and fine for a big list. For the two or three people who matter most, Lovely's Happy Diwali card (₹79) opens like a visit — a door with your photo behind it, diyas that each reveal one of your lines, a rangoli, a mithai box and their name written in the sky. Build it in about five minutes and send it on Lakshmi Puja, Sunday, November 8, 2026.

The three kinds of online Diwali card

| | Static image | E-card portal | Interactive page | |---|---|---|---| | What it is | A design you make, saved as a JPG | A stock animated card with your name | A link that plays scenes they tap through | | Cost | Free | Free (often with ads) | ₹79 one-time on Lovely | | Personal | Low–medium | Low | High — your photos, your lines | | Best for | Family groups, office, society WhatsApp | Elders who enjoy animations | One partner, parent, best friend, sibling | | Lasts | Until it scrolls up | Until the link expires or ads change | A permanent private link |

None of these is wrong. A static card to your 80-person society group is exactly right; making 80 interactive pages would be absurd. The mistake is sending the same forwarded image to your mother that you sent to the society group.

If you want the full tool-by-tool comparison, the best free greeting card makers in India tests eight of them honestly, and Lovely vs 123Greetings covers when a classic e-card is still the better call.

What makes a Diwali card worth opening

After a few hundred forwards, people stop opening Diwali images. The cards that still get opened have a few things in common:

  1. Their name is visible before they tap. "Happy Diwali, Mummy" beats "Happy Diwali."
  2. There's a photo they're in. Not a stock diya — your last Diwali together.
  3. It does something. A card that waits for them to light a diya feels different from one that just sits there.
  4. It says something specific. One memory beats five blessings.
  5. It doesn't need an app. Anything that asks your nani to install something has already lost.
  6. It arrives at the right time. Not during the puja; not at 1 am.

How to make a Diwali card on Lovely, scene by scene

Lovely's Happy Diwali template is the interactive kind. Here's what each scene does and what to write in it.

1. The door. A carved wooden door under a marigold toran, with ghar aao at the top. They tap to swing it open, and your photo is waiting inside: aa gaye? Use a photo where you're actually looking at the camera — it's the "someone's waiting for you" moment.

2. The diyas. The room goes dark: too dark in here. fix it? Each diya they light reveals one of your lines and turns on a few more string lights above. Choose 3 to 7 diyas. Write one specific reason per diya — "your laugh, louder than the crackers"; "the year you drove me to every exam". When the last is lit: the whole house is glowing.

3. The rangoli. They pick from five powder colours — rani pink, marigold, haldi yellow, leaf green, peacock blue — and the rangoli fills ring by ring until your centre photo blooms. A photo of the two of you, or the whole family, works best here.

4. The mithai box. A pink box with a "for you, only" seal opens to up to six sweets — kaju katli, laddoo, jalebi, gulab jamun, barfi, rasgulla — each with a caption you write. The defaults are playful (barfi: the one mummy hides. we find it anyway.), and a small note photo sits inside the lid.

5. The phuljhadi. The last scene steps outside. They press and hold a phuljhadi, and it writes their name across the night sky in sparks, followed by fireworks they can keep tapping. Your closing line and sign-off sit underneath.

Then publish. Every line, the name, your sign-off and all four photos are editable. Pay ₹79 once (UPI works), and Lovely gives you a private link and a QR code in about five minutes. They open it from WhatsApp — no app, no account.

The default text is written for a partner. For parents or a sibling, rewrite the diya lines in their voice — the structure (door → light → colour → sweets → name) works for anyone you'd visit at Diwali.

"An e-card says Happy Diwali," says Lovely's founder. "This one says I came over. That's the whole difference people tell us about."

What to write: borrow, then change one word

You don't have to write seven lines from scratch. Take them from the banks and change one detail each:

  • For a partner — Diwali wishes for girlfriend or boyfriend
  • For parents, siblings, in-laws — Diwali messages for family
  • In Hindi — Diwali wishes in Hindi
  • For everyone else — Happy Diwali wishes

When to send it

  • Dhanteras (Friday, Nov 6) — too early for the card; fine for a "Diwali's coming" line.
  • Choti Diwali (Saturday, Nov 7) — good for people who'll be busy on the day itself.
  • Lakshmi Puja (Sunday, Nov 8) — the main send. Afternoon, or late evening after the puja.
  • Abroad — Diwali evening in India is Sunday morning in New York and early afternoon in London, so a card sent at 8 pm IST lands at breakfast in the US.

Pairing it with a physical gift

If a sweet box, a hamper or a saree is already going by courier, the card doesn't have to be separate. Print the QR code on a small tag and tie it to the box, so the page opens the moment they unwrap it. The full method is in Diwali 2026: a digital page that travels with your physical gift.

What NOT to do

  1. Don't send the interactive card to a group. It's built for one person; in a group it's just another link.
  2. Don't leave the default lines in. "Your 'ek photo aur' face" is cute — but only if it's true of them.
  3. Don't send during the puja. It'll get opened at 11 pm in a rush, or not at all.
  4. Don't use a blurry group photo for the door. The door is a close-up moment.
  5. Don't send without a nudge for elders. A five-second voice note — "tap the door, Papa" — makes all the difference.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to send an online Diwali greeting card?

Match the card to the list. A free static image you design yourself is right for a big contact list; an interactive page is right for the two or three people you'd visit if you could. Send both on WhatsApp — static cards to groups, the page as a private link to one person.

How much does an online Diwali greeting card cost?

Static designs and e-card portals are usually free. Lovely's Happy Diwali card is ₹79 one-time, paid by UPI or card, with no subscription; the recipient pays nothing and needs no account. An optional custom domain is a separate add-on most people don't need for a festival card.

Can I make an online Diwali card with my own photos?

Yes. The Happy Diwali template has four photo spots — behind the door, at the centre of the rangoli, on the note inside the mithai box, and in the finale — and every line of text is editable. You can also choose how many diyas (3 to 7) and how many sweets (3 to 6) appear.

When should I send a Diwali e-card?

On Lakshmi Puja day — Sunday, November 8, 2026 — ideally in the afternoon or late evening, not during the puja. For people abroad, remember the time difference: Diwali evening in India is Sunday morning in New York and early afternoon in London.

Will my parents be able to open an online Diwali card?

If they can open a WhatsApp link, yes. The card opens in the phone's browser with no app or sign-up, and each scene has a single obvious button — open the door, light the diya, pick a colour, hold the phuljhadi. Sending a short voice note with the link ("tap the door, Mummy") helps.
