Shubh Deepavali, Diwali mubarak, Happy Diwali — which one?
All three are right. They just land differently.
- शुभ दीपावली / दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ — formal and respectful. For dadaji, a teacher, your manager's father, the society WhatsApp group.
- दिवाली मुबारक — warm, conversational, very North Indian — common in Delhi, Lucknow and old Hyderabad homes where Hindi and Urdu mix.
- Happy Diwali — for friends, colleagues and anyone across regions. In Chennai or Bengaluru you'll also hear Happy Deepavali, because that's what the festival is called there.
On spelling: शुभकामनाएँ is the standard modern Hindi spelling; शुभकामनायें is everywhere on WhatsApp and nobody will mind. On a printed card or a message to an elder, use the standard one.
If you'd rather have English-first wishes for a mixed contact list, Happy Diwali wishes is the broader bank. For parents, siblings and in-laws specifically, see Diwali messages for family.

दो लाइन दिवाली शायरी — two-line Diwali shayari (10)
The dash is where the couplet breaks. Send as one line on WhatsApp; break it on a card.

For the hour around the Lakshmi-Ganesh puja on the 8th — send before the aarti, not during.
पाँच दिन, पाँच शुभकामनाएँ — for each day of Deepotsav (6)
In 2026: Dhanteras Friday Nov 6, Choti Diwali Saturday Nov 7, Lakshmi Puja Sunday Nov 8, Govardhan Puja Monday Nov 9, then Bhai Dooj.
For Bhai Dooj itself, the Bhai Dooj 2026 guide has region-wise lines for Bhau Beej and Bhai Phonta too.
छोटे स्टेटस — very short Devanagari status lines (8)
Hinglish wishes for WhatsApp (12)
Romanized Hinglish is what most people actually type — and it reads best on WhatsApp status, because it fits the crop and renders on every phone.
When the wish deserves more than a forward
A Hindi wish to your nani on WhatsApp is perfect as it is. But for the one or two people you'd visit if you could — parents in Indore while you're in Pune, a best friend who moved to Dubai — some people want the words to arrive with a little ceremony.
Lovely's Happy Diwali template is a five-scene visit. A carved wooden door under a marigold toran swings open on your photo ("aa gaye?"). Then the room goes dark, and each diya they tap lights up with one of your lines — this is where a शुभकामना or a couplet from above goes, 3 to 7 of them — while string lights come on above. They pour colours into a rangoli that blooms around your photo, open a mithai box of up to six captioned sweets, and finally hold a phuljhadi that writes their name across the sky. Every line, the name, your sign-off and all four photos are editable. ₹79 one-time, a link and QR code in about five minutes, and it opens from WhatsApp with no account.
"For parents, the Hindi pages are the ones that get shown to relatives," says Lovely's founder. "A forward gets deleted. A page with their name in the sky gets passed around the room."
Make it yours: the one edit
Add one name, one place or one relationship word — and keep the rest of the line as it is.
- "आपके घर-आँगन को" → "आपके इंदौर वाले घर-आँगन को"
- "Ek diya umeed ka" → "Ek diya Chintu ki nayi naukri ka"
- "सपरिवार आपको" → "मामा जी, सपरिवार आपको"
What NOT to do:
- Don't send a devotional line to someone who doesn't celebrate — choose a light-and-sweets line instead.
- Don't mix three scripts in one message; pick Devanagari or romanized.
- Don't forward an image with someone else's shop logo on it to your elders.
- Don't wish "Happy Diwali" on Dhanteras morning and then go silent on the 8th — the 8th is the day they'll notice.
The same card-writing logic applies all year — what to write in a birthday card in Hindi breaks it down for other occasions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you say Happy Diwali in Hindi formally?
"Aapko aur aapke parivaar ko Deepavali ki haardik shubhkamnayein" — दीपावली की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएँ — is the standard formal wish for elders, teachers and office seniors. "Shubh Deepavali" (शुभ दीपावली) is shorter and equally respectful. "Diwali mubarak" is warm and widely used in North India, especially in Urdu-Hindi speaking homes.
Is it शुभकामनाएँ or शुभकामनायें?
Both spellings are common on WhatsApp, but शुभकामनाएँ is the standard modern Hindi spelling and is what you will see in newspapers and official greetings. Either will be understood; use the standard one on a printed card or a message to a teacher or elder.
What is a good two-line Diwali shayari in Hindi?
Something with a clear image and one rhyme — "Andhera poochhe, kab tak jaloge? Diye bole, jab tak apne saath chaloge." Two lines fit a WhatsApp notification and a status crop, and they are easy to personalise by changing a single noun. This page has ten original ones in Devanagari with romanized versions.
Should I send Diwali wishes in Devanagari or Hinglish?
Devanagari for elders, family groups and printed cards, because the script itself reads as respect. Romanized Hinglish for friends and WhatsApp status, where it renders cleanly on every phone and fits the crop. Every Devanagari line on this page copies together with its romanized version.
Can I send a Hindi Diwali wish as a page instead of a text?
Yes. Lovely's Happy Diwali template lets you type your own lines — Hindi or Hinglish — into diyas they light one by one, a mithai box of captioned sweets, and a finale where a phuljhadi writes their name in the sky. It costs ₹79 one-time and opens on any phone without an account.
