TL;DR
58 original Holi wishes in Hindi, sorted by who you are sending to: Devanagari lines for the family group and elders, romanized Hinglish for WhatsApp status, playful lines for friends, and soft ones for the person who won't be home this Holi. Holi 2027 is Monday, March 22 (Holika Dahan the night before, Sunday March 21). Tap any line to copy it — Devanagari lines copy with the romanized version underneath — then make the one edit at the bottom so it stops sounding forwarded.
Before you copy: who is this Holi wish for?
Holi is the one festival where the same message can be perfect for your cousin and slightly wrong for your nani. "Bura na mano, Holi hai" is a joke between equals. It lands differently on a 72-year-old who has been blessing you since before you could hold a pichkari.
So this page is sorted the way Holi morning actually runs in most Indian homes:
- Holika Dahan night — the family group, the bonfire photos, the elders. Devanagari, warm, short.
- Colour morning — friends, the gully, the society WhatsApp. Hinglish, a little cheeky.
- Afternoon, after the bath — the one far away, the person you didn't get to colour. Softer.
In Mathura and Vrindavan the festival runs for a week; in Barsana it starts with Lathmar Holi; in Bengal it is Dol Jatra; in Bihar people still say Phaguwa. If the person you're wishing grew up with one of these, say the regional name in your wish. It's the cheapest personalisation there is. होली की शुभकामनाएँ — Devanagari, for family and elders (14)
For the family group, a card, or a forward to the elders. These lean on blessings, not jokes.
Hinglish Holi wishes for WhatsApp (14)
Romanized Hindi reads best on WhatsApp status — it survives the crop, renders on every phone, and the reply comes back in the same language. (If you post status a lot, how to put shayari on WhatsApp status covers fonts and the 700-character limit.)
For friends and the gully gang (10)
The cheeky lane. Fine for cousins, college friends and the society group; maybe not your boss.
For the one who isn't home this Holi (10)
A hostel in another city, a first job in Bengaluru, a flat in Toronto. Holi is a crowded festival, which is exactly why missing it stings. Keep these gentle and don't attach "kab aa rahe ho".
Short Holi wishes for status and stories (10)
Under ten words. For the status you post at 8 a.m. before your phone goes into a ziplock bag.
When a copied wish isn't enough
Every family group gets the same 400 forwarded "Happy Holi" images by 10 a.m. A line from this page already beats those, because a person chose it. But for the one person you'd colour first — a partner, a best friend, a sibling in another city — there's a version that feels more like playing Holi than reading about it.
Lovely's Happy Holi template opens on a photo of them and the words "way too clean." They pick a colour from a five-bowl thali — pink, yellow, green, blue, orange — and tap anywhere to throw it until the screen says "better." Then the terrace: three to six water balloons hang from the parapet, and each one they pop splashes open one of your lines. Next, a blob of gulaal they rub away with a finger to find a photo underneath ("oh. it's us. obviously."). The finale asks them to hold a button to pump a pichkari and drench their own name, with two photos and your sign-off under it.
Every line, every photo and the name are yours to change, and you choose how many balloons appear. It costs ₹59 one-time, and they open it from a single link — no app, no account.
"Holi is the most physical festival we have, and the pages that do well for it are the ones that let people actually do something — throw, pop, scratch," says Lovely's founder. "A wish is read once. A pichkari gets held down three times."
If you want a longer couplet rather than a wish, Holi shayari has rhyming two-liners, and Holi captions for Instagram covers the photo dump.
Make it yours: the one edit
Add one Holi detail that only the two of you know. One per wish, not three.
- "Is Holi ghar mein gujiya kam padein" → "Is Holi Mausi ki gujiya kam padein — tum aath kha jaate ho"
- "Terrace pe milte hain" → "Sharma ji ki terrace pe milte hain, wahan se balloon seedha jaata hai"
- "Pichhle saal ka gulaal" → "2025 ka woh hara jo tumhare baalon se do hafte nahi gaya"
- "Tum door ho" → "Tum Pune mein ho aur yahan thandai ka ek glass bach gaya"
The second version can't be forwarded by anyone else on earth. That's the whole trick.
What NOT to do:
- Don't forward the same image to elders and to friends. Two lines, two audiences.
- Don't make "bura na mano" jokes to someone who has asked not to be coloured. Holi works because it's consensual chaos — and the same goes for skin-safe, herbal gulaal over the industrial stuff.
- Don't send at 7 a.m. to people abroad. Check their time zone; a Holi wish that lands at 3 a.m. in Toronto reads as an alarm.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Holi wish in Hindi?
One that sounds like a person, not a printed card — "Is baar rang utne hi pakke hon jitni humari dosti." The best Holi wishes name one thing about the person or the day, like the terrace, the gujiya or last year's stubborn pink. Add that one detail and a generic wish becomes yours.
When is Holi in 2027?
Holika Dahan falls on Sunday, March 21, 2027, and the colour day, Dhulandi or Rangwali Holi, is on Monday, March 22, 2027. Regional calendars can differ by a day, so check a local panchang if you are timing a puja. Send wishes on the night of Holika Dahan or early on the morning of colours.
Should I send Holi wishes in Devanagari or Hinglish?
Devanagari for elders, the family WhatsApp group and anything formal — the script itself reads as respect. Hinglish for friends and WhatsApp status, because it fits the status box and nobody has to switch keyboards to reply. Every Devanagari line on this page copies with its romanized version attached.
How do I wish Holi to elders respectfully in Hindi?
Use aap, lead with blessings rather than jokes, and keep it short: "Aapka aashirwad hi humara sabse pakka rang hai." If you can, follow it with a call — elders value hearing the voice more than reading the wish. Save the bura-na-mano humour for cousins and friends.
Is there something better than a forwarded Holi image?
A Holi page with your own photos. Lovely's Happy Holi template lets them throw colour at a photo, pop water balloons that each carry your line, scratch gulaal off to find a picture of you both, and pump a pichkari at their name — ₹59 one-time, sent as one private link.
