TL;DR
Twenty friendship promises below, sorted by the kind of friendship they suit — everyday, hard-times, long-distance, and the honest funny ones. Tap any to copy. Then pick your best six and put them on a Friendship Promise page (₹29, about 8 minutes), which is an 8-scene page with a live counter of how long you have known each other. The point isn't decoration. A promise sent in a chat scrolls away by Thursday; a promise on a page has an address, and your friend can open it again in a year and check whether you kept it.
Twenty promises worth making
One rule before you copy anything: promise a behaviour, not a feeling. "I'll always be there for you" cannot be kept or broken, which is why everyone says it. "I'll pick up if you call twice in a row" is a real promise with a real cost. Swap in their name where it helps.
The everyday ones (5)
The hard-times ones (5)
The long-distance ones (5)
The honest funny ones (5)
Pick six, not twenty
The promises scene on the page holds up to six, and that ceiling is doing you a favour. Twenty promises read like a terms-and-conditions page; six read like someone sat down and thought about it.
The set that works best is a mix: two everyday, two hard-times, one that is funny, one that is the sincere line you have never actually said out loud. Put the sincere one last. That's the one they'll screenshot.
What else is on the page
The Friendship Promise template is eight scenes, and the promises are only one of them:
- A shy opening that introduces your friend by name before it says anything else
- A live time-together counter — you enter the date you met (a best guess is fine) and it calculates the elapsed time every time the page is opened
- A memory scene or two for the specific moments the friendship is built on
- The promise cards, up to six
- A closing dedication
The whole thing takes them about ninety seconds to walk through and takes you about eight minutes to make, most of which is the writing. If your friendship is old enough to deserve a full history rather than a set of promises, the you & me timeline template is the longer-form option, and our friendversary ideas guide covers when each one fits.
Why a page and not a text
Here's the honest argument for spending ₹29 on something you could type for free.
A promise in a chat is disposable by design. It scrolls up, it gets buried under sixty forwards, and neither of you can find it in three months. Nobody is ever held to it, which is precisely why promises made in chat are so easy to make.
A promise on a page has a location. It sits at one link that doesn't expire, and your friend can open it on a bad day next March and read what you committed to. That's the difference: the page is what makes a promise something you can't quietly delete.
It's also the digital descendant of a ritual India already has. The friendship band was never valuable — it was thread. It mattered because it was tied on in front of people and stayed on your wrist until it fell apart on its own. Our friendship band digital alternative post covers that lineage properly.
"₹29 is deliberately the smallest price we have," says Lovely's founder. "Promises shouldn't need a budget conversation. If someone hesitates over the cost, they'll write a weaker page — so we took the hesitation out."
The steps and the honest cost
- Open the Friendship Promise template and hit create.
- Enter their name, the date you met, and a memory or two.
- Write your six promises — copy from above, then change the details so each one is yours.
- Preview it on your phone, since that is where they will open it.
- Pay ₹29 once through Razorpay (UPI, card or netbanking).
- Send the link with no explanation.
| Route | Cost | Recurring | Time | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Friendship Promise page | ₹29 one-time | ₹0 | ~8 min | | Handwritten note + courier | ₹80–250 | ₹0 | A day, plus delivery | | A long WhatsApp message | ₹0 | ₹0 | 10 min, gone by Thursday | | Custom domain add-on | +₹100 one-time | ₹0 | +2 min |
If you want the fuller appreciation format instead — a list of ten specific things they did rather than promises about the future — that's the ₹49 Thanks Bestie route, and the website for my best friend guide walks through the choice.
What NOT to promise
- Don't promise forever. Everyone hears it as filler. Promise this year, specifically, and let the renewals speak for themselves.
- Don't promise something you're already failing at. If you haven't called in five months, "I'll call every week" reads as an apology in disguise — send an actual apology to your best friend first, then make the page later.
- Don't promise on someone else's behalf. No "we'll always" if the we includes a partner or a whole group.
- Don't hide a request inside a promise. "I promise to be here whenever you need me" is sometimes a complaint wearing a nice shirt. Say the complaint separately.
- Don't attach it to a date. A promise made on a calendar occasion gets filed under that occasion. Sent on a Thursday, it gets filed under you.
Frequently asked questions
What is a friendship promise page?
It is a small private web page built around the promises you are making to one friend. On Lovely it is an 8-scene page with a live counter of how long you have known each other, a memory or two, and your promise cards. You send the link; they open it in a browser with no app and no signup.
What promises should I make to my best friend?
Promise behaviours, not feelings. "I will always love you" is unfalsifiable; "I will pick up when you call twice in a row" is a promise you can actually keep or break. The strongest sets mix two everyday promises, two hard-times promises and one that is funny enough to be true.
How many promises fit on the page?
Up to six in the dedicated promises scene, and the layout adapts if you write three. Six is the ceiling for a reason — a list of twenty reads like a contract, while six reads like someone meant it.
How much does a friendship promise page cost?
₹29 one-time on Lovely, which makes it the cheapest thing in the catalogue. That includes hosting and a permanent private link, with no subscription and nothing for your friend to pay.
Do I need an occasion to send it?
No. Promises made on a date sound like a card; promises made on a random Thursday sound like a decision. The page has no occasion branding on it, so it works on any of the 364 days that are not Friendship Day.
