TL;DR

Depth beats frequency. You can exchange 300 messages a day with your best friend and still not know what they're actually afraid of — because "wyd" and memes keep a friendship alive, not known. The 75 questions below are grouped by where they land: childhood, fears and dreams, the friendship itself, funny-deep, would-you-rather-deep, and the road-trip/2 AM tier. Ask three, follow one, and stop when something real shows up. And if the conversation ends with you both realising this friendship is the load-bearing wall of your life, there's a way to put that on record for ₹25 — or start with the 50 appreciation lines if words are the hard part.

Why depth beats frequency

Most best-friendships in India run on volume: the group chat, the daily voice notes, the reels forwarded at 1 AM. Volume is good — it's the heartbeat. But a heartbeat isn't a conversation. Ask yourself: do you know what your best friend would do if their current plan collapsed? What they think happens after death? Which fight almost ended you two, from their side of it?

If not, you don't need more messages. You need one unhurried hour and better questions. Three rules before you start:

  • Setting does half the work. Drives, walks, terraces, train journeys — anywhere eye contact is optional. Face-to-face across a table is an interview; side-by-side is a conversation.
  • Answer first sometimes. Depth is a trade, not an extraction. If you ask "what's your biggest regret" and offer nothing, you're a journalist, not a friend.
  • Follow, don't collect. The list below is a menu, not a syllabus. One question that opens into forty minutes beats fifteen questions with one-line answers.

Past and childhood (1–12)

  1. What's your earliest memory that still feels vivid?
  2. What did you want to be at age eight, and what killed or kept that plan?
  3. What's something your parents did that you only understood after growing up?
  4. Which teacher changed something in you — good or bad?
  5. What were you like before I knew you? Would I have liked that version?
  6. What's a childhood habit you secretly still have?
  7. What did your family never talk about at the dinner table?
  8. Who was your best friend before me, and what happened there?
  9. What's the first time you remember feeling genuinely proud of yourself?
  10. What rule from your childhood home do you still follow without thinking?
  11. What's one thing from growing up you're determined to do differently?
  12. If you could sit with your 15-year-old self for ten minutes, what would you say — and what would they think of your life now?

Fears and dreams (13–24)

  1. What's the fear that actually runs your decisions — not spiders, the real one?
  2. What would you attempt if you knew nobody would ever find out you failed?
  3. What does "settled" mean to you — and do you even want it?
  4. What's a dream you've quietly downgraded, and was that wisdom or surrender?
  5. Where do you genuinely see yourself at 40? Not the LinkedIn answer.
  6. What's something you're scared of becoming?
  7. If money stopped mattering tomorrow, what would Monday look like?
  8. What compliment do you wish you received more often?
  9. What's the thing you'd regret not doing if everything ended early?
  10. Whose approval are you still chasing, honestly?
  11. What part of your life looks fine from outside but isn't?
  12. What would you need to hear right now that nobody's saying to you?

The friendship itself (25–37)

These go deepest, fastest — because you both have skin in the answer.

  1. When did you know I was your person? Exact moment, if you have one.
  2. What almost ended us? Tell me your version.
  3. What's one thing I do that annoys you that you've never officially reported?
  4. What do you think I'm wrong about — about myself?
  5. When have I let you down and you never told me?
  6. What's your favourite version of me — which year, which era?
  7. What do you never say to me out loud because you assume I already know?
  8. If we met today, as strangers, do you think we'd still become this?
  9. What's one thing you've told me that you've told no one else?
  10. What role do I actually play in your life — in one honest sentence?
  11. What's a moment I probably forgot that you never will?
  12. What would you want me to do if you were making a huge mistake — stop you or stand with you?
  13. Fifty years from now, what do you hope is still true about us?

Funny-deep (38–50)

Laughing and meaning it at the same time — the best-friend speciality.

  1. What's the dumbest thing you genuinely believed until embarrassingly recently?
  2. If your life were a Bollywood film, which scene is the interval twist?
  3. What's your most irrational hill to die on?
  4. What would your 3 AM search history reveal about your actual worries?
  5. If we got arrested together, what would it most plausibly be for?
  6. What's the pettiest reason you've ever cut someone off — and do you regret it?
  7. Which of your exes or crushes do I still have to pretend to be neutral about?
  8. What's a compliment you once got that was technically an insult?
  9. If you could send one anonymous text to anyone from your past, what and to whom?
  10. What's your funeral song, and why is it that?
  11. What's something everyone loves that you secretly find overrated — and something overrated you secretly love?
  12. Which lie do you tell most often, and to whom?
  13. If I wrote a book about you, what would the chapter titles be? Give me three.

Would-you-rather, deep edition (51–62)

  1. Would you rather be fully known by one person or mildly liked by everyone?
  2. Would you rather relive your best year on loop or fast-forward to your best decade?
  3. Would you rather your biggest secret got out, or never be able to tell anyone a secret again?
  4. Would you rather succeed at something you don't love or struggle at something you do?
  5. Would you rather know how every relationship in your life ends, or know none of it?
  6. Would you rather be the one who loves more or the one who is loved more?
  7. Would you rather lose all your memories of us or have me lose all of mine?
  8. Would you rather have your dream life in a city where you know no one, or your current life with your people forever?
  9. Would you rather always say what you think or never be misunderstood again?
  10. Would you rather get one honest answer to any question, or avoid one question forever?
  11. Would you rather be 25 forever with this friendship, or grow old with the risk we drift?
  12. Would you rather I read your chats for a day, or you read mine? (The hesitation is the answer.)

Road trip and 2 AM material (63–75)

For highways, terraces, and the hour when the truth gets loose.

  1. What do you think happens after we die? Actual current theory.
  2. Do you believe people can really change, or just get better at hiding?
  3. What's the loneliest you've ever felt — and where was I?
  4. What's something you've forgiven but not forgotten?
  5. If you disappeared for a year, no explanation, where did you go?
  6. What's the closest you've come to giving up on something big — and what held?
  7. Do you think we become our parents? How much of yours is already in you?
  8. What's a belief you had five years ago that embarrasses you now?
  9. What's the kindest thing a stranger ever did for you?
  10. If love and security were a trade-off, which way do you lean — really?
  11. What's the question you hope nobody ever asks you? (You don't have to answer it. Just name it.)
  12. What are you becoming? Not doing — becoming.
  13. If tonight was the last normal night before everything changed, what would you want us to do with it?

After the talk: don't let it evaporate

Here's the pattern with deep conversations — the night feels enormous, then Monday arrives and the group chat is back to reels. The talk deserves a marker.

  • Friendship Promise — 8 scenes, a time-together counter, promise cards you write yourself. Take the promises that surfaced at 2 AM and make them official. ₹25, about ten minutes.
  • Thanks, Bestie — if question 25 or 35 wrecked you, this scrapbook page with one honest paragraph is where that answer belongs.
  • you & me — an ongoing story — the stories that came up ("remember when—") are literally the timeline entries; this page turns them into a scrolling history.

Fair warning: if question 25 made your stomach drop in a non-platonic way, that's a different article — read am I in love with my best friend before you build anything. Otherwise, here's how the whole thing works.

Frequently asked questions

What are good deep questions to ask your best friend?

Questions about the friendship itself beat abstract ones: "When did you know I was your person?", "What almost ended us?", "What do you never say out loud because you assume I know?" Both of you have skin in those answers, which is why they go deep fast.

How do I start a deep conversation without making it weird?

Go side-by-side, not face-to-face — a drive, a walk, a terrace at night. Ask one question, answer it yourself first, and let silence sit. Depth comes from following one answer, not covering the list.

Why do deep conversations matter more than talking every day?

Daily texting keeps a friendship alive; depth makes it worth keeping alive. You can trade hundreds of messages a week and still not know your friend's real fears. One honest hour a month builds more than a month of memes.

What questions should long-distance best friends ask each other?

Ask what updates the map: "What's different about your daily life that I wouldn't know?", "What have you stopped telling me because it feels too small?" Then mark the call with something they can keep — long-distance friends need artifacts, not just calls.
