How to Ask Your Best Friend Out (and What to Send)

The page you actually send when you want to ask your best friend out — what goes on it, which template fits, what to write, and what it costs (₹1–₹49).

A Tiny Daydream

For the friend you've started catching feelings for

A Tiny Daydream

₹49

Nine playful scenes about what 'us, but more' might look like — pastel morphing blobs, shimmer titles, sticker GIFs — and it ends with an invitation to talk, not a button to commit.

TL;DR

If you have decided to ask, this page is about the thing you send — not about whether to. Send a link, not a speech: a page they open alone gives them room to react without an audience, which is the single biggest reason friendships survive this. Below: what goes on the page, which of the three templates fits your situation, the words that do the actual work, and the honest cost (₹1 to ₹49, one payment). If the answer is no, take it gracefully — the friendship usually survives the question and rarely survives the pressure afterwards.

Whether to ask is a different page

There is a real decision before this one — how to read the signals, how long to wait, whether the friendship can carry it — and it has its own guide. Friends to couples: how to test the water walks through six signals and what each response means, and more than friends, less than lovers is for when you are stuck in the undefined stage rather than moving out of it. If you are still trying to work out whether the feelings run both ways, 12 signs your best friend is in love with you is the reading list — and am I in love with my best friend runs the same check in the other direction, on yourself, which is the one worth doing first.

This page assumes you are past all of that. You have decided. Now you need something to send.

Why sending beats saying, specifically for a best friend

With a stranger, in person is fine. With a best friend it is a trap, and for one narrow reason: they have to react instantly, in front of you, and you will both remember the face.

Your best friend already knows they are going to have to protect your feelings. If the answer is no, they now have to produce a kind expression under time pressure while their brain is still catching up — and whatever face they manage is the thing you will replay for months. If the answer is yes, they have to be sure of it inside four seconds, which is not how anyone is sure of anything.

A link removes the clock. They open it in their own room, read it twice, feel whatever they feel with nobody watching, and answer when they have an answer. It also removes the audience problem completely: no restaurant, no friends nearby, no chance of it becoming a story someone else tells.

"The kindest version of this question is the one they can answer badly and still be forgiven for," says Ganesh, Lovely's founder. "A room does not allow that. A link does."

What actually goes on the page

Six sections, in this order. The order matters more than the words.

  1. The history, first. Two or three specific shared things — the trip, the exam week, the night the auto driver got lost in Indiranagar. Not "we have been friends for years." Specifics prove this is about them and not about being lonely.
  2. The turn. One short passage about when the friendship started feeling like something else. This is the only part that needs to be brave, and it should be about four sentences long.
  3. The reassurance. Say plainly that the friendship is not conditional on the answer, and mean it. This section is the reason the page is safe to open.
  4. A photo or two. Not a gallery. Two pictures where you both look like yourselves.
  5. The ask, kept small. "Would you want to try being something else?" is enough. Resist the paragraph.
  6. The exit. An explicit line giving them permission to take time, or to say no, without anything breaking. End on this, not on the ask.

The single most common mistake is putting the ask at the top. It turns the whole rest of the page into an argument for a yes, and nobody enjoys being argued at.

Which template fits

Three of Lovely's templates work for this, and they are not interchangeable.

| Template | Price | Shape | Best when | |---|---|---|---| | A Tiny Daydream | ₹49 | Nine playful scenes about what "us, but more" could look like, ending in an invitation to talk | You are asking gently and the friendship is the thing you are protecting | | We're More Than Friends | ₹49 | A receipt of suspiciously un-friendly moments, an annotated photo board, a dictionary entry for "friend" formally corrected, then a sincere reveal | You both already half-know, and humour is your shared language | | I Like You | ₹1 | One question, two buttons, confetti on Yes | You want the smallest possible ask and no build at all |

A Tiny Daydream is the default recommendation here, and the reason is structural: it deliberately does not end in a commit button. Nine scenes present a possibility and then close with an open invitation, which is the exact tone a friendship needs. It takes about eight minutes to customise, and the words you write in the scenes are the work — the pastel blobs and sticker GIFs carry the mood, not the meaning.

We're More Than Friends is the funnier route, and the humour is doing real work: it gives both of you somewhere to stand if the answer needs a minute. The receipt items are the writing — moments that were never quite just-friends, each with a label and a verdict line you write yourself. Choose it only if joking is genuinely how you two talk. If it is not, it reads as deflection.

I Like You at ₹1 is the minimum viable version. One custom question, a Yes that triggers confetti and the message you wrote, and a No button that runs away when hovered — a joke about your nerves, which you can switch off in the editor's Effects tab if you would rather the choice be straight. For a best friend, switching it off is usually the right call. The walkthrough is in how to make a "do you like me" page.

Building it, start to send

  1. Preview the template all the way through before you write anything, so you know the shape you are filling.
  2. Write the history section first. It is the easiest one and it warms up the rest.
  3. Write the ask last and then cut it in half.
  4. Publish and pay once — ₹1 or ₹49 through Razorpay, UPI included. No subscription, lifetime access, and the page stays at its link.
  5. Turn on the password lock if you want one. Optional on every page, and popular for this exact use.
  6. Send the link alone, at a decent hour, with no caption. "made you something, open when you're free" is the whole message.

Your dashboard will later show how far they got and whether they reached the end. Look once. Then close it and leave your phone alone — watching a page get read is not a hobby you want.

The three lines that do the work

Everything else on the page is decoration around these.

  • "I did not want you to find out from someone else." Honest, and it explains why now.
  • "Nothing about us has to change if the answer is no." Say it early. Then behave like it afterwards, which is the hard part.
  • "You do not have to answer today." The most generous sentence in the whole thing.

If you want more raw material, 45 paragraphs to send your crush has copy-and-paste lines organised by how forward they are, and an online confession page for your crush covers what to put on a page when the person is not a friend first. For the general build rather than the friendship version, a website for your crush is the wider guide.

What not to do

  • Do not send it in a group chat, or post anything about it publicly, or tell mutual friends first. An audience turns a private question into a situation they have to manage in front of people.
  • Do not send it after a night out. Both of you should be sober and it should not arrive at 2 a.m.
  • Do not attach a deadline, not even a soft one. "let me know by the weekend" is pressure wearing a helpful hat.
  • Do not send a second page. If the first got no reply, the reply is the silence.
  • Do not frame it as an ultimatum — no version of "things can't stay like this" belongs on the page. It is a question, and they are allowed to answer it.

If the answer is no

Some of the time it will be, and the friendship's survival depends almost entirely on the next week rather than on the page. Thank them. Tell them, once, that the friendship matters more, and then prove it by going quiet for a while — a bit of distance right after is kindness, not sulking, and it gives both of you room to reset.

What ends friendships is not the question. It is the double-texting at midnight, the cryptic Instagram story, the mutual friend dispatched to find out what they really meant, and the apology for having had feelings at all. They said no: what to do in the 24 hours after is the full version of that hour, and it is worth reading before you send, not after.

If you are the one who has been asked and you do not feel the same, signs your best friend is in love with you has a section on answering kindly.

Frequently asked questions

How do you ask your best friend out without ruining the friendship?

Ask in a way they can decline privately and without an audience. A page sent as one link does that better than a conversation in a room, because nobody has to arrange their face in real time and both of you get to think before anything is said out loud.

What should go on a page for your best friend?

The history first, the feeling second, and the ask last — kept small. Specific shared memories are what make it unmistakably about them, and the closing line should offer a conversation rather than demand a yes.

Is it better to ask in person or send something?

For a best friend, sending usually wins. In person, they have to react instantly in front of you, and the friendship's whole future gets decided by whatever face they happen to make in the first two seconds. A link gives both of you room.

What does it cost to make a page for a best friend?

₹1 for the simplest yes-or-no question page and ₹49 for the multi-scene ones on Lovely — a single payment, no subscription, and the person opening it never pays or signs up.

What if my best friend says no?

Thank them, tell them the friendship matters more, and then actually give them space for a while — no double-texting, no cryptic stories, no mutual friends sent to investigate. Most friendships survive this; very few survive the week of pressure that sometimes follows it.
