TL;DR
A letter to myself works when it's written to one reader — your younger self, your future self, or you on a hard day — and it follows a simple shape: what I see, what I forgive, what I promise, signed. Below are 63 original lines for each kind of letter, opening lines and sign-offs, Hinglish and Devanagari sections, and three short complete letters you can copy and change. Tap to copy, then do the one edit at the bottom.
Three kinds of letter, three different readers
Most people who search for "letter to myself" have one of three in mind, and they read very differently:
- To your younger self. Comfort for the version of you who didn't know it would be okay. The tone is gentle, never "you idiot".
- To your future self. A time capsule. What life looks like now, what you hope for, what you want to ask. It's read in a year, or five, or on your 30th birthday.
- To yourself, today. A note for a hard day, a big day or an ordinary Tuesday — the thing you'd tell a friend in your situation, finally said to you.
Pick one. A letter that tries to talk to all three versions of you at once tends to become an essay nobody wants to read, including you.
How to write one in ten minutes
- Open plainly. "Dear me" or "Hey, you." No preamble.
- Say what you see. One honest description of where you are, right now. Not where you should be.
- Forgive one thing. One. A mistake, a year, a decision, a body.
- Promise one thing. Small and keepable: "I'll drink water" counts. "I'll fix my whole life" doesn't.
- Sign it. "Love, me." It feels silly. Do it anyway.
That's it. If writing to someone else is easier for you, how to write a letter to your parents uses the same structure and is good practice.

To yourself today — for a hard day (10)
The gentlest section. Read it out loud if you can.
A letter to yourself can be a real comfort. It isn't a replacement for talking to someone. Romanized Hindi often feels closer to your own inner voice than formal English — especially for the hard-day letters.

What not to write
- A performance review. "You failed at X, Y and Z" isn't a letter; it's an appraisal. Name one thing to forgive, not ten things you did wrong.
- Goals you'd be ashamed to miss. "By next year I'll be rich and married" reads cruelly at 30 if life went differently. Write hopes, not targets.
- Someone else's words. Quotes are fine as a closing line. The body should sound like you.
- A letter meant for someone else. If it's really a message to an ex or a parent, write that letter separately.
When you want the letter to be something you can open
A letter in your Notes app gets buried under shopping lists. A paper letter gets lost in a drawer. For the version you want to come back to — on the bad Sundays, the night before a big exam, your birthday — Lovely's A Note to Self template puts it on a mirror.
It opens on a bathroom mirror fogged up with steam: "the mirror's all fogged up. wipe it. someone wants to see you." You drag a finger to wipe the glass clear and find your own photo and, written in lipstick, hey, you. Then the shelf has a lipstick: tap it, and reminders appear on the mirror one by one — three to six, written by you: "you're doing better than you think." / "rest is not lazy. it's maintenance." / "drink water, bestie." Then a step away from the mirror: "give yourself a hug. yes, seriously." You hold a button while the breathing prompts change — breathe in… and out. one more. slower. there. needed that. Last, you kiss the mirror to seal it: a letter to myself: i choose you. today, and on the bad days too. — signed, me.
It costs ₹29 one-time, and every line on the mirror is yours to write. Keep the link pinned in your own chat, or send it to a friend with their name on it, who needs to hear it more than you do today.
"People told us they open it before interviews, in the office bathroom," says Lovely's founder. "It's the only page we've made where the sender and the reader are usually the same person."
Make it yours: one real detail
Add one detail from your actual life right now — a place, a person, a worry, a smell.
- "I'm proud of you" → "I'm proud of you for walking into that Andheri office every day this month."
- "Rest is allowed" → "Rest is allowed. Yes, even with the presentation on Thursday."
- "Dear future me" → "Dear future me, I'm writing this on the terrace and the neighbour's pressure cooker just went off."
Future you will remember the pressure cooker long after the big goals blur. For the public, caption-sized version of the same feelings, self love quotes for Instagram is the companion page, and on your birthday, birthday captions for myself has 75 more.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a letter to myself?
Pick one reader — your younger self, your future self, or you today — and write to them the way you'd write to a friend. Open with what you see, name one thing you forgive, make one promise, and sign it. Ten minutes and half a page is enough; it doesn't need to be beautiful to work.
What should I write in a letter to my future self?
What your life looks like right now in plain detail — where you live, what worries you, who you talk to every day — plus one hope and one question you want answered. Specific present-day details are what make it moving to read in five years; big goals alone usually aren't.
What do you say in a letter to your younger self?
The things you needed to hear and didn't: that it gets better, that the thing you were ashamed of was normal, that the person who hurt you was wrong. Keep it kind rather than corrective. The point is comfort, not a list of mistakes to avoid.
Is writing a letter to yourself helpful on a bad day?
It can be. Writing to yourself in the second person — "you are tired, and that's allowed" — often feels gentler than thinking it. But if you've been low for weeks or are having thoughts of not wanting to be here, please also talk to someone. In India, Tele-MANAS on 14416 is free and runs 24x7.
Can I make a letter to myself as a page?
Yes. Lovely's A Note to Self template is a fogged bathroom mirror you wipe clear to find "hey, you.", then lipstick notes you write on the glass, a hold-to-hug breathing moment, and a kiss that seals "a letter to myself: i choose you". It's ₹29 one-time, and you can send it to yourself or a friend.
