How to Propose a Boy on Chat: 40 Lines Without the Cringe

How to propose a boy on chat when you go first — a 5-step script, 40 lines in Hindi and Hinglish, and what his clumsy first reply really means.

We're More Than Friends

₹49

A confession built like a case file — a receipt of suspiciously un-friendly moments, a photo board with hand-drawn arrows, the dictionary entry for 'friend' formally corrected, and a final reveal that says the actual sentence.

TL;DR

Proposing to a boy on chat is the same five steps as any other confession — ordinary evening, one message, one specific detail, one plain sentence, then an exit for him — with two differences that matter. Hints have probably not landed, so the message has to carry everything on its own. And he is more likely to be genuinely surprised, which means his first reply may be clumsy and his real answer may take two days. Forty lines follow, in Hindi and Hinglish, split by whether he already knows.

The 5-step script

1. Pick an ordinary evening. Not 2 a.m., not the night before his interview, not straight after a fight. A regular Tuesday at 7 p.m. gives him a normal night to think in, and the timestamp becomes part of the memory.

2. One message, not a drip. Write it, read it once, send it as a single block, then put the phone face down. Six messages in ninety seconds turns a confession into an event he has to survive live.

3. Name one specific thing. Not "you are the sweetest person I know" — "the fact that you carried my whole group's bags at the Nashik trip and then complained about it for two hours." One detail proves you were paying attention to him, and that is the only real evidence any confession has.

4. Say the sentence. "Mujhe tum pasand ho." Plain. The paragraph you were going to put in front of it is delay, and he will feel it as delay even if he cannot name it.

5. Hand him the exit, then stop typing. "Jawab aaj dena zaroori nahi." Then nothing — no "?", no checking his last seen. The silence is part of the method, not a failure of it.

What is genuinely different in this direction

Two things, and neither of them is the feeling.

Hints almost certainly did not land. If you have spent four months replying faster, remembering things, being warmer — there is a real chance he registered none of it as a signal. That is not a comment on him; it is what happens when someone is not expecting to be signalled at. The practical consequence is that subtlety is a worse strategy here, not a safer one. Say it in words that cannot be read two ways.

His first reply may not be his answer. A person who did not see it coming often says something awkward in the first minute — a joke, a "haan pata tha", a wall of nothing — and then something true a day or two later. So it is fair to give a fumbled first reply a little air.

But be precise about what that does and does not mean. It means a bad thirty seconds is not necessarily the verdict. It does not mean a no is a maybe, and it is not permission to make the case again. If what comes back after a day is no, that is the answer, and it gets one message in reply and then quiet.

"Half the confession pages built on Lovely are girls going first," says Ganesh, Lovely's founder. "The templates were never gendered. The advice on the internet is, and it's usually the wrong shape."

1. Pehla message (10)

The doorbell, if you want one. Short — this is not the confession, it is the notice that one is coming.

2. Asli baat — the actual ask (12)

Pick one. Exactly one — a second version of the same sentence makes the first one sound like a draft.

3. Agar usko pehle se pata hai (8)

For the version where he has clearly worked it out and you have both been maintaining the silence together.

4. Usko jagah dene wali lines (10)

Step 5 in ten forms. Attach one, then stop typing.

What NOT to do

  1. Do not tell his friends first. By far the most damaging one in this direction. Once other people know, they are waiting to hear what he said, and a boy answering with an audience is answering the audience.
  2. Do not stack the messages. One block, then quiet.
  3. Do not send a borrowed shayari in a male voice. Half the propose shayari online is written as karta hoon and does not survive being re-gendered — propose shayari for a boyfriend is written the right way round if you want lines with more shape than these.
  4. Do not attach a deadline. "Aaj hi batana" gets you the answer that ends the pressure, not the true one.
  5. Do not read a clumsy reply as an opening. Giving a fumbled first response a day is fair. Making the case a second time is not.
  6. Do not send it during his exams, his notice period, or a family emergency. Not superstition — a message that arrives into a bad week gets remembered as part of the bad week.

And the one that matters most: if it is a no, take it gracefully. "Theek hai. Bataane ke liye thanks." Then go quiet for a real stretch. Not a punishment, not a cold shoulder — just room. That is the difference between a friendship that recovers and one that quietly ends without anyone announcing it.

Still deciding whether to say anything at all? Should I confess or stay friends is the honest version of that argument, and how to confess to a crush without ruining the friendship covers what you are actually risking.

When a message isn't the right size

If this has been going on for two years and there are eleven unsent drafts in your phone, a single message compresses all of it into one line — and he receives a summary of something that was never small.

A page holds it better, mostly because it opens full screen with nothing else around it and does not expect an answer in thirty seconds. We're More Than Friends is the one built for exactly this stage: it makes the argument instead of the declaration, with a receipt of suspiciously un-friendly moments, a photo board with arrows, the dictionary entry for "friend" formally corrected, and a final reveal that says the real sentence. The humour is load-bearing — it gives both of you somewhere to stand while he thinks. ₹49.

If you want to see the full set of options first — six page types sorted by how much he already knows — a website for my crush lays them out with what each is for.

Frequently asked questions

How does a girl propose to a boy over chat?

Directly, privately, in one message. Name one specific thing about him, say the sentence in plain words, and end by telling him he does not have to answer tonight. The only real difference from the other direction is that hints are far less likely to have landed, so the message has to do all the work on its own.

Is it weird for a girl to propose first?

No, and it is a lot more common than the internet's shayari suggests — the lines online are written in a male voice because of who publishes them, not because of who confesses. Going first mostly means skipping several more months of both of you guessing.

What if he reacts badly at first?

A surprised person often says something clumsy in the first minute and something honest two days later, so a fumbled first reply is worth giving a little time. What it is not is an invitation to persuade him. If what arrives after that is a no, it is a no, and the right move is to accept it in one message.

Should I tell his friends first?

No. Routing a confession through friends turns it into news before it is a conversation, and it takes away his ability to answer honestly, because by then other people are waiting to hear what he said. Send it to him and nobody else.

Chat or a page?

A message is right when the feeling is recent and fits in one. A page is better when it has been going on for years, because a link opens full screen with nothing else around it and gives him room to sit with it instead of replying in thirty seconds.
