TL;DR
62 original housewarming wishes, sorted by who's moving in and how well you know them: short wishes, a friend's first flat, family who finally built their own house, colleagues, funny lines, Hinglish, a short Hindi set, and card and gift-tag lines. Tap to copy. The rule that makes any of them land: wish them the life inside the house, not the house — nobody remembers "congrats on the property", everybody remembers "save me the balcony chair". If you need the full Hindi griha pravesh set, it has its own page.
Short housewarming wishes (10)
For WhatsApp, a reply to the photos in the group, or the line under a gift.
For a friend's first flat (8)
First flat, first rented 1BHK, first place without a PG warden — this is a bigger milestone than people admit.
For family — parents, siblings, a home years in the making (8)
When it's your parents' own house after decades of rentals, or your brother's first flat after a long EMI journey, the wish carries more.
For a colleague or acquaintance (6)
Polite, warm, and safe for the office group or LinkedIn-adjacent relationships.
Funny housewarming messages (8)
Joke about the move, never about the money.
Hinglish one-liners (8)
Romanized Hinglish reads best on WhatsApp — quick to type back, renders on every phone, and sounds like a person rather than a card.
हिंदी — a short set (6)
For elders, a printed card or the family group. Each copies with its romanized line. The full Hindi set — for elders, the puja, the family group and cards — is in griha pravesh wishes in Hindi.
Card and gift-tag lines (8)
Short enough for the tag on a plant, a set of steel glasses or a box of dry fruits — the three most-gifted housewarming items in Indian homes for a reason.
What NOT to write
- Anything about the price, the loan or the EMI. Even as a joke. It's the one topic every new owner is tired of.
- Comparisons with your own place. "Ours is bigger but yours is so cosy" is a backhanded compliment, and they will hear it that way.
- Vastu opinions nobody asked for. If the kitchen faces the wrong way, it's too late now.
- "When is the party?" as the whole message. Wish first. Then ask.
When you're the one who got the keys
If you landed here because you're about to host a housewarming rather than attend one, the wishes are coming to you — what you need is the invite. Lovely's Housewarming Invite opens on your front door, with a toran of mango leaves and marigolds and a WELCOME mat. Guests drag the key to the lock and the door swings open onto a hand-drawn floor plan of your new place — they tap each room to read a line you wrote about it ("maa's kingdom. papa's midnight snack raids."). Then five diyas: each one they light draws a new ring of a rangoli, with petals at the end. The last card is the invite itself — date, time, address, what to bring — and two buttons: count me in and i'll be late (obviously). Switch the details off and it becomes a "we've moved" card instead. ₹49 one-time, and it opens from the family WhatsApp group with nothing to install.
"People send it to the family group and then to every friend individually," says Lovely's founder. "It's the first time most of them have something to show for all those flat-hunting weekends."
For the ceremony side — muhurat, the three types of griha pravesh, what an online invitation should carry — the griha pravesh guide has it all.
Make it theirs: the one edit
Name one thing about the actual house. That's the whole trick.
- "May every room fill up with good days" → "May that big window in the living room fill up with good days"
- "Here's to many dinners" → "Here's to many dinners on that ridiculous eight-seater table"
- "Congratulations on the new home" → "Congratulations on the new home — and on finally leaving Koramangala traffic behind"
The second version proves you looked at the photos. That's what people notice.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good short housewarming wish?
Something that wishes them the life inside the house, not the house itself: "May every room fill up with good days." Short wishes work best on WhatsApp and gift tags. Add one detail — the city, the balcony they kept talking about — and it reads as written for them.
What do you write in a housewarming card?
Two lines: one wish for the home and one personal note. "May this home be full of laughter and very long dinners. Save me the balcony chair." Avoid writing about the price, the EMI or the location — the card will sit on a shelf for years.
What is a funny housewarming message for a friend?
Joke about the things everyone goes through in a new place — the unpacked boxes, the Wi-Fi, the first plumber visit. "Congratulations on your new home. The boxes will be unpacked by 2029." Keep jokes away from rent, loans or the size of the flat.
How do I wish someone for a griha pravesh?
Use a blessing rather than a congratulation — "Griha pravesh ki hardik shubhkamnayein, aapka naya ghar sukh aur shanti se bhara rahe." For the full set of Hindi wishes, there is a separate griha pravesh bank with lines for elders, family groups and cards.
Can I send housewarming wishes if I could not attend?
Yes, and it matters more then. Send the wish on the day, not the week after, and add a specific line about visiting: "Sorry to miss the puja — I am claiming dinner the first Sunday you are free." A gift sent by courier or UPI shagun with the message is completely normal.
