TL;DR

You can send an engaged couple a genuinely good gift without a courier. The ten options below fall into two groups: useful (shagun on UPI, vouchers for things they're already buying, a hamper, a booking) and personal (a page with their story, a curated album, a recorded message from the friend group). The strongest combination for a close friend is one of each — shagun plus something personal. Costs, what each one says, and when a physical gift beats all of them are below. For the words to go with it, 60 engagement wishes for a friend are sorted by friendship.

Why engagement gifts are harder than wedding gifts

At a wedding, the rules are clear: an envelope or a wrapped gift, handed over at the reception. Engagements are fuzzier. Some are a 30-person roka in a living room in Ludhiana; some are a 300-guest sagai at a banquet hall; some are a proposal on a beach that the couple announces on Instagram. Half the people who want to congratulate the couple aren't invited to anything at all.

That's why online gifts make so much sense here. They work whether or not there's a ceremony, whether or not you're invited, and whether you're in the same city or on a different continent.

The filter for every option: is this useful, or is this personal? Gifts that are neither — generic e-cards, random gift cards — are the ones couples forget by the wedding.

Five useful gifts

1. Shagun on UPI, with a real note. The most Indian engagement gift there is, and still the most useful — the wedding is coming and it is expensive. Friends commonly send ₹501, ₹1,100 or ₹2,100; amounts ending in 1 are traditional for luck. Make it warmer: send the amount on UPI, then send a separate personal message, not a "for you" in the payment note.

2. A voucher for something they're already buying. Wedding shopping is the next six months of their lives — clothes, jewellery, home things. A voucher for the store they've mentioned is shagun with a direction. Cost: ₹1,000–₹5,000.

3. A food hamper on the day. A box of mithai or a dry-fruit hamper delivered to the house on the day of the roka, when the house is full of relatives. Cost: ₹800–₹2,500. Says: I'm part of the celebration even though I'm not there.

4. A couples' experience booking. A dinner, a spa day, a pottery class — something for the two of them, away from the planning chaos. Cost: ₹2,000–₹6,000. Pick a date-flexible option; engaged couples' calendars are brutal.

5. Pay for something on their list. If you're close, ask the couple directly — the mehendi artist's deposit, the photographer's travel, the sangeet choreographer. Cost: whatever you can manage. Says: I'm helping, not just gifting.

Five personal gifts

6. A page with their love story. This is where Lovely sits. See the full walkthrough below — ₹59, built by you, sent as a link.

7. A curated photo album. Collect thirty photos of the couple from friends and family — the college ones, the trip ones, the first family dinner — and share them as a single album with a caption for each. Cost: free, about two hours. Says: we've all been watching you two fall in love.

8. A friend-group video. Every friend records fifteen seconds of congratulations and one memory; someone stitches it together. Cost: free. Says: everyone showed up for you.

9. A handwritten letter, photographed. Write a real letter about the friendship and the partner, photograph it, send it — then post the original. Cost: a stamp. Says: I took time over this.

10. A donation in their name. For the couple who'd honestly rather not receive anything. Pick a cause they care about. Cost: any amount. Says: I know you.

Gift number six, properly explained

The We're Engaged template is designed as the couple's own announcement — which is exactly what makes it a good gift when you build it for them. Here's what they'll open:

  • The little box. "psst. something happened…" above a velvet ring box. They press and hold until the lid lifts and the ring rises — "she said yes".
  • Put it on. They drag the ring onto her ring finger. "It fits. obviously."
  • Our story. Two to five chapters, each in a tall arched photo frame with a Roman numeral, a title and a line. The defaults: the hello ("a wedding. someone else's. we stole the show anyway."), the first date, the question, the yes and what's next.
  • It's official. Their names, "are engaged", the date — and a "send your blessings" button that showers petals.

How to make it as a gift:

  1. Collect the facts. Their names, the engagement date, and — the important part — four or five photos from their story. Ask a mutual friend if you have to.
  2. Write the chapters. Use what you witnessed: where they met, what they said about each other early on. The friend's-eye view is the gift.
  3. Preview it by holding the box open yourself.
  4. Pay ₹59 once (UPI works) and send the link to the couple on the day of the ceremony.
  5. Let them forward it. Many couples send it straight on to the family group as the announcement.

"A friend who builds the engagement page is giving the couple their story back, written by someone who was there," says Lovely's founder. "It's the one engagement gift that gets forwarded more than it gets thanked."

What each gift costs, side by side

| Gift | Typical cost | Useful or personal | Arrives | |---|---|---|---| | Shagun on UPI | ₹501–₹2,100+ | Useful | Instantly | | Shopping voucher | ₹1,000–₹5,000 | Useful | Instantly | | Mithai hamper | ₹800–₹2,500 | Useful | Same/next day | | Couples' experience | ₹2,000–₹6,000 | Both | When they book | | Story page | ₹59 | Personal | Instantly | | Photo album | Free | Personal | Instantly | | Friend-group video | Free | Personal | A few days | | Letter | A stamp | Personal | Instantly (photo) |

The strongest pairing for a close friend: shagun + one personal gift. For a colleague or acquaintance, a warm message and a modest shagun are plenty.

When a physical gift wins

Online isn't always right. Bring a wrapped gift when:

  • You're attending the ceremony and the family follows the custom of gifts at the function.
  • Elders expect it. Some families keep a record of who gave what; an online gift may not register the same way with them.
  • It's for their home. Dinnerware, a painting, a lamp — things they'll use daily are better seen and held.

Even then, the personal online gift can sit alongside — the page is a nice thing to send the morning after, when the hall is empty and the couple is scrolling through the photos.

What NOT to send

  • A generic e-card with an animated ring. It reads as an afterthought.
  • A gift card with no context. Pair any voucher with a real message.
  • Anything for "the bride" only if the couple is clearly a team about this.
  • A joke gift about marriage being a trap. Funny in the friend group, less funny when the in-laws see it.

If the couple is already planning the invitations, save the date wording and the Roka invitation guide are useful to forward with your gift.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement gift to send online?

The best online engagement gifts are either useful (shagun, a voucher for something they are already buying) or personal (a page with their story, a curated photo album). Avoid generic e-cards. If you are close to the couple, a personal gift plus shagun covers both bases.

How much shagun should I give for an engagement?

It depends on how close you are and on family custom, but many friends give ₹501, ₹1,100 or ₹2,100 — amounts ending in 1 are traditional for luck. Relatives usually give more. Sending it on UPI with a short personal note feels warmer than a bare transfer.

Can I send an engagement gift if I could not attend?

Yes, and it matters more when you are absent. Send it on the day of the roka or sagai so it arrives while they are celebrating. A message, a UPI shagun and something personal — a page or a photo album — make up for not being in the hall.

What is a personal online engagement gift?

A page built around their story. Lovely's We're Engaged template lets you write their chapters — the hello, the first date, the question, the yes — with their photos, a velvet ring box that opens when held and a petal shower for blessings. ₹59 one-time, sent as a link.

When is a physical engagement gift better than an online one?

When you are attending in person, when the family expects a wrapped gift at the ceremony, or when the gift is something they will use at home. Online gifts shine when you are far away, short on time or want something personal; they do not replace showing up.
