TL;DR

60 emotional messages for a best friend, sorted by what set it off — not by occasion, because this is not an occasion. These are for the random Wednesday when it lands on you out of nowhere: right after they did something, after months of not talking, the moment you realise how long it has actually been, and 2 AM. There is a Devanagari set and a Hinglish set at the end. Tap any card to copy it. One rule before you send: name the trigger in the first line, or it reads like a forward.

Section by trigger, not by occasion

Most message banks sort by date — birthday, festival, farewell. That works when there is a date. This page exists for the other case, which is much more common and much worse served: something happened, and now you want to say a thing you have never said.

So everything below is sorted by the trigger. Find the one that matches why you are reading this at whatever time it currently is, and the message will already be half right.

Two rules that apply to all sixty:

  • Name the trigger in the first line. "I was thinking about last Tuesday and —". "Nothing is wrong, I just saw a photo and —". The trigger is what proves you are not forwarding something. Without it, even a beautiful message reads as generic.
  • Do not stack them. One message, sent alone. Four heavy lines in a row turns a feeling into a broadcast, and they will not know which one to respond to.

If what you want is the occasion version instead, those already exist and are better at their job: paragraphs for a best friend on Friendship Day for the August version, and birthday paragraphs for a best friend for the one with a cake in it. This page is deliberately the other 364 days.

Right after they did something for you (1–12)

Send within 24 hours. The specificity is free while the memory is fresh.

After a long stretch of not talking (13–24)

The gap grew without either of you deciding on it. Do not apologise for it — just close it.

When you realise how long it has actually been (25–34)

Ten years in, fifteen years in, and it lands on you at a red light.

At 2 AM, when it just hits you (35–44)

Heavier. Send one. Do not send four.

देवनागरी — emotional dosti lines in Hindi script (45–54)

For the version you write out rather than fire off — a note, a card, a page.

Hinglish one-liners for status and the group chat (55–60)

Short enough to sit under a photo, light enough to not make it an event.

What NOT to send

  • A heavy message with no opening line. If you drop four emotional lines at 1 AM with no context, their first reaction is panic, not warmth. "Nothing is wrong" costs you three words.
  • The same message to four people. Emotional messages are the one category where a broadcast is worse than silence.
  • A message that is really a complaint. "I miss you, you never text first" is a grievance wearing a nice outfit. Send the missing, sort the frequency out separately.
  • Something romantic dressed as friendship. If the real message is not platonic, this is not the page for it — read this first before you send anything you cannot take back.
  • A follow-up asking if they read it. Let it sit. Most people genuinely do not know how to answer these.

When a message is the wrong size

There is a point where the feeling stops fitting in a chat window. You can tell you have hit it because you keep rewriting the message and it keeps getting longer.

At that point the format is wrong, not the words. A long message in WhatsApp gets skimmed once and is four hundred messages up by next week. The version that survives is a page: their name on the first screen, a list of the specific things they did, your photos in the middle, and one closing line. That is Thanks, Bestie — ₹49 through UPI, about ten minutes, sent as a private link they open with no app and no signup.

Before you start, what actually goes on that page, section by section is the two-minute read that decides whether it lands — the appreciation list is where the whole thing is won or lost.

"The messages people can't send are almost never short," says Ganesh, Lovely's founder. "They keep growing until the person gives up. What they actually needed was a bigger container, not fewer words."

Make it yours in thirty seconds

  1. Put the trigger in the first line. The photo, the auto ride, the song, the date on the calendar you noticed.
  2. Swap one bracket for a real noun. A number of years, a month, a place, a night.
  3. Pick the language your chat is actually in. Send the romanized line and delete the Devanagari, or keep the Devanagari if you are writing it out properly.
  4. Send one, alone, at night. No sticker after it. No "hehe". Let it be the last thing in the chat for a while.

If the friend in question is a girl and you want to make sure it stays clearly platonic, these messages for a girl best friend are written with exactly that line in mind, and if the shukriya version is closer to what you mean, 55 thank-you shayari covers it in Hindi.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good emotional message for a best friend?

One that names the trigger. "You mean so much to me" is a sentiment; "I was in an auto today and thought about the night you came to the hospital" is a message. The trigger is what stops it reading like a forward.

Is it weird to send an emotional message for no reason?

Only if you do not say that there is no reason. Open with "nothing is wrong", because an out-of-nowhere heavy message makes most people assume something has happened. After that line, a random Wednesday is the best day of the year to send one.

How long should an emotional message be?

Three to six lines for a text. If it is longer than that, it wants to be something else — a voice note, a letter, or a page they can open once and reread later without scrolling through a chat.

Should I send it in Hindi or English?

Whatever the two of you actually text in. Romanized Hinglish reads fastest on WhatsApp and is what most Indian friend groups use; Devanagari is for the version you write out properly. Every line here copies with both attached.

What if they do not reply?

Most people do not know how to answer a message like this, and a weak reply is not a verdict on the message. Do not send a follow-up asking if they saw it. It landed. Give it a day.
