TL;DR

Seventy cute names for your husband, sorted by what kind of husband he is: classic sweet names, funny names built from his habits, Hindi and Hinglish ones, the regional forms of address Indian wives actually use (Aho, Emandi, Ennanga, Ree, Ogo), understated names for the man who hates mush, and contact names for saving his number. Tap any name to copy it. The section at the end shows how to invent the one nickname that's only his — it beats every list, including this one.

The best nickname is evidence

A nickname is a tiny piece of proof that you've been paying attention. "Jaanu" says you love him. "Captain Chai" says you've noticed he's made the morning tea for six years without being asked. The second one is the one he'll pretend to be embarrassed by and then repeat to his friends.

That's why this list is sorted by type of husband, not alphabetically. Skim to the section that sounds like him, then use the last section to customise.

One more thing worth knowing: in a lot of Indian homes, wives didn't say their husband's name at all — out of respect, an older generation used a form of address instead. Several of those have come back as affectionate in-jokes, and they're in their own section below.

Classic sweet names (12)

The ones that work in every language and every mood — chat, voice notes, the card on his birthday.

Funny names built from his habits (12)

Pick the one that describes him. If none does, that's your cue for the last section.

Hindi and Hinglish names (12)

Romanized Hinglish is what most couples actually type — it reads fastest on WhatsApp and doesn't need a keyboard switch.

"Hukum" carries a Rajasthani royal flavour and is usually said with a grin. "Swami Ji" is the teasing one — it works best when he's being bossy.

देवनागरी — for a card or a festival message (8)

Devanagari reads as care in a way romanized text doesn't — perfect for a Karwa Chauth note, an anniversary card or the letter section of a page. Each one copies with its romanized form.

The regional ones Indian wives really use (8)

These began as respectful forms of address — a way of calling him without saying his first name — and many couples now use them with affection, or as a running joke about their parents' generation.

  • Aho — Marathi; roughly "hey, you", the classic way a Maharashtrian wife calls her husband.
  • Emandi — Telugu; "listen, you" in a respectful register.
  • Ennanga — Tamil; "what is it, dear?" turned into a name.
  • Ree — Kannada; a respectful call, often stretched into a long "Reeee" when he's not answering.
  • Ogo / Shunchho — Bengali; "listen" and "are you listening?", affectionately exasperated.
  • Suniye Ji — Hindi; the old-film way to call him from the kitchen.
  • Chetta — Malayalam; literally "elder brother", but used by many Malayali wives for their husbands.

Using one of these is a lovely nod if he grew up hearing his mother say it — or if you married across regions and you're learning his language one word at a time.

For the husband who hates mushy names (6)

Some men cringe at "baby" but light up at a name that sounds like a title. Affection without sugar:

What flashes on your screen when he calls. Short, one emoji, nothing you'd regret if your phone rings during a presentation in Gurugram.

When a nickname deserves a whole page

Nicknames are inside jokes with a name tag. If you've got a funny one, the For My Hubby template is built to hold it. It opens on a parcel with a shipping label — "contents: 1 husband, assembled by his mummy, ship to" and then his name, or his nickname, which is funnier. He swipes down the tape to cut the box open and finds himself inside. The next page is his user manual: "MODEL: CAPTAIN-CHAI-01", if you like, with up to six tap-to-reveal features in your words. Then a low-battery warning he fixes by holding a hug-charge button, a scratch-off warranty card ("purchased with 7 pheras… valid forever"), and a finale that reads "best thing i ever unboxed". ₹79 once.

"The nickname is usually the first thing people change on that page," says Lovely's founder. "Nobody ships the parcel to 'Arjun'. They ship it to 'Snore Lord'."

If the nickname has given you ideas for a caption, 62 hubby quotes for Instagram are sorted by the photo you're posting. And if you're here for her side of the couple, the cute nicknames for your girlfriend in Hindi list is the mirror image.

Make it yours: invent the one name that's only his

Every great nickname follows the same formula: one real detail + one title.

  1. Pick the detail. A food he's obsessed with, a habit, a city, a phrase he overuses, a thing he always breaks.
  2. Add a title. Sahab, Ji, Captain, Professor, Lord, Chief, Mister, Raja.
  3. Say it once, casually. If he grins, it stays. If he groans, it definitely stays.

Examples: "Momo Sahab" for the man who orders momos in every city. "Professor Pune" for the one who explains Pune traffic to everyone. "Lord Five-More-Minutes". "Captain Kalyan Local".

What NOT to do: don't use a name his ex used (ask if you're not sure), don't use a nickname about his body, and don't debut a teasing one in front of his parents. Some names are for the two of you.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cute name to call my husband?

The cutest names come from something he actually does — "Captain Chai" for the man who makes the morning tea, "Mr Five Minutes" for the one who is always late. Classic options like Jaan, Jaanu and Shona work everywhere, but a name built from a real habit is the one he will secretly love.

What do Indian wives traditionally call their husbands?

Many regions have a respectful address instead of his first name: "Aho" in Marathi, "Emandi" in Telugu, "Ennanga" in Tamil, "Ree" in Kannada, "Ogo" or "Shunchho" in Bengali and "Suniye ji" in Hindi. Plenty of couples now use these affectionately, as a joke on the older custom rather than a rule.

What should I save my husband's number as?

Something short that makes you smile when it flashes on the screen — "Home 🏠", "Mine", "Chai Partner ☕" or his nickname plus one emoji. Avoid anything you would be embarrassed by if your phone rang in a meeting, because it will.

My husband hates mushy nicknames. What should I call him?

Try understated ones — "Boss", "Partner", "Chief", "Mister" — that carry affection without the sugar. Many men who cringe at "baby" quietly enjoy a nickname that sounds like a title, because it reads as respect with a wink.

How do I come up with a unique nickname for my husband?

Take one specific habit, food or moment from your marriage and turn it into a title: the city you met in, the dish he burns, the phrase he overuses. "Biryani Sahab" or "Professor Google" cannot belong to anyone else, which is the whole point of a nickname.
