Congratulations Gift Online: Send a Front Page, Not a Forward

A congratulations gift online that arrives today: an honest look at mithai, bouquets and gift cards, then how to make a ₹59 newspaper page with their name.

Congratulations

₹59

The Daily Legend, circulation one: their name in the headline, two to four news stories you write, stamps they tap onto the page, and a champagne bottle they shake until it pops.

Make their newspaper

Ready in ~10 minutes · shares as a private link on WhatsApp

TL;DR

If you want to send a congratulations gift online and have it arrive today, you have four realistic options: a mithai or cake delivery, flowers, a gift card, or a page. The first three need an address, a delivery slot or both; a page needs neither. Lovely's Congratulations template turns the news into a one-copy newspaper — their name in the headline, stories you write, stamps, a champagne pop — for ₹59, in about ten minutes, opening from a WhatsApp link. Below: the honest comparison, the build, and what to write.

The four options, honestly

Good news has a shelf life. The congratulations that arrives the same evening is worth three times the one that arrives on Thursday. That one constraint reorders the whole list.

1. Mithai or a cake delivery — ₹400–₹1,500. The Indian default, and for good reason: kaju katli is a language. Delivery apps reach most metros in under an hour. Bad at: Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns where slots disappear by afternoon, anyone abroad, and anything personal — the card that comes with it says "Congratulations!" in a font you didn't choose.

2. Flowers — ₹500–₹2,000. Lovely for a promotion or a new home where there's a desk or a table to put them on. Bad at: a hostel room, a PG, a man who will not know where to keep them, and lasting more than four days.

3. A gift card or UPI transfer — any amount. Genuinely useful, especially for a fresher or a student. Bad at: feeling like a gift. Money between friends can read as payment; from elders it's shagun, which is lovely but isn't a message.

4. A page — ₹59. Arrives in seconds, carries your words, works anywhere. Bad at: being an object. There's nothing to hold, and if the person you're congratulating is your nani who doesn't open links, send the mithai.

The sensible answer for most people is a page plus one of the others — the mithai for the house, the link for the person.

What the Congratulations page actually does

The template is built as a newspaper, because good news deserves a headline. It runs in four scenes:

  1. The morning paper. A rolled-up paper with a band around it — "special edition," "printed just for you." They tap snap the band to open it.
  2. Front page news. The Daily Legend, vol. 1, no. 1. A big headline you write ("Riya did it."), a subhead ("sources confirm: literally everyone saw it coming"), a photo captioned like a press shot, and a column of two to four short news stories — the editor lets you set how many. The defaults are a good guide to tone: "mom cries, denies it — 'onions,' she said. there were no onions" and "mithai shop sold out — kaju katli demand up 400%." They tap the page to stamp it: verified, iconic, 100% earned (one to three stamps, your choice).
  3. Pop the bubbly. Page two. "This calls for bubbles." They hold a button to shake a champagne bottle, a gauge fills, and the cork goes — POP!
  4. The final edition. "Congratulations," their name in large type, a line you write ("we always knew. now it's in print.") and your sign-off — "your loudest fans, page 1 forever."

Every word is editable, the photos are swappable, and the steppers control how many stories and stamps appear. If you'd rather have your lines ready before you open the editor, the 70 congratulations messages bank has a whole section written as headlines.

Building it: start to send

  1. Open the template from the Congratulations info page and tap through the preview once, so you know what they'll see.
  2. Write the headline first. Three to five words. Their name plus the verb. "Riya did it." "Kabir got the job." "Ammi cleared the loan."
  3. Write the news stories. Two to four, each a tiny headline plus one line. This is where the family in-jokes go — the uncle who already told the whole society, the dog who doesn't care.
  4. Swap the photo for one of them — ideally a slightly unflattering candid; front pages are never posed.
  5. Pay ₹59 once through Razorpay — UPI, card or netbanking. No subscription.
  6. Send the link on WhatsApp with almost no caption. "Read today's paper" is plenty.

Most people finish in eight to ten minutes. The time goes into the headline, which is how it should be.

What to put in the stories

The stories column is the part people screenshot, so it's worth two minutes. Good stories are:

  • Specific to the household. "Papa calls 11 relatives before 9 a.m." beats "everyone is happy."
  • Exaggerated, not invented. Inflate something true. Don't make up a fake rival.
  • Short. One headline, one line under it. Newspapers don't do paragraphs on page one.
  • Ending on the sincere one. Three jokes, then "doubters in shambles — they have been notified" or something softer that you actually mean.

For a Hindi-speaking family, write the stories in Hindi or Hinglish — the format carries it beautifully. The Hindi congratulations bank has lines by occasion you can trim into headlines.

When to send it

The same evening as the news, if you can. Results, offer letters and promotions all have a 24-hour window where they're still the main thing in someone's life.

If you're late, lean into it: "the late city edition" is printed right on the masthead. A newspaper that arrives a day after the news is, technically, accurate.

Two timing traps:

  • Not while they're still waiting. Congratulate the result, not the rumour. A page sent before the official mail is a jinx in most Indian households.
  • Not in the middle of the celebration. If the family is at the mithai shop, they'll skim it in eight seconds. Send it that night, when they're alone with their phone and the adrenaline is fading.

"The best congratulations arrive after the noise," says Lovely's founder. "When the calls stop and they're lying in bed reading everything again — that's when a front page lands."

The honest cost table

| Option | Cost | Arrives | Needs an address | Carries your words | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | UPI / gift card | Any | Instantly | No | Barely | | Mithai or cake delivery | ₹400–₹1,500 | 1–6 hours (metros) | Yes | A printed card | | Flowers | ₹500–₹2,000 | Same or next day | Yes | A printed card | | Congratulations page | ₹59 one-time | Seconds | No | Entirely | | Custom domain for the page | +₹100 | Minutes | No | — |

For other milestones the same logic holds with a different page: a graduation gift gets a convocation stage and a tassel to move, and a new job gift gets an elevator ride to the top floor. If the person is your best friend and the feeling is pride rather than celebration, the proud of you page is the quieter option.

What not to do

  • Don't announce it. "I'm making you something" turns a gift into a deadline.
  • Don't write a front page about yourself. "Proud friend celebrates" is not the headline.
  • Don't include the salary, the rank number or the price of the house in the stories. Their family will forward this.
  • Don't wait for a perfect photo. The press shot can be the blurry one from the canteen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good congratulations gift I can send online?

One that arrives the same day and carries your own words. A mithai or flower delivery works if you have an address and a few hours; a personalised page works instantly from anywhere. Lovely's Congratulations template is ₹59 and turns the news into a front-page newspaper with their name in the headline.

How much should I spend on a congratulations gift?

For a friend or colleague, ₹50 to ₹1,000 is the normal Indian range, and the words matter more than the number. A mithai box with a real note beats an expensive hamper with a printed card. A page costs ₹59 one-time and has no delivery charge.

How long does it take to make a congratulations page?

About eight to ten minutes. The newspaper is already designed; you type the headline, two to four short news stories, a sign-off and their name, and optionally swap in a photo. Most of the time goes into writing a headline that makes them laugh.

Does the person need an app or account to open it?

No. They get a private link — usually over WhatsApp — that opens in any phone browser. They snap the band, read the front page, tap stamps, shake the champagne bottle and reach the final edition, all without signing up.

Can I send it to someone abroad?

Yes, and that is where it is most useful. A link has no customs, no delivery window and no international shipping fee. A cousin in Toronto or a friend in Dubai opens it the moment it lands, and the payment on your side is a normal UPI or card payment in rupees.
