TL;DR

Ten new job gift ideas you can send online in India, with honest prices and what each one is bad at. The useful ones solve the first two weeks — food in a new PG, a desk upgrade, a commute. The memorable one carries your words. Lovely makes one option on this list, a ₹49 page that rides an elevator from "day 001" to the top floor; it's best for distance and for the night before joining, and no substitute for a treat in person.

What the first two weeks actually look like

A new job in India is rarely just a new desk. It's often a new city, a PG or a shared flat, a commute nobody has figured out yet, two weeks of induction slides, and a first salary that arrives at the end of a very long month.

So the useful gift question is: what helps between joining day and the first payslip? And the memorable gift question is: what will they still have in a year? Good gifts answer one of those. Great ones pair the two.

The useful shelf — first two weeks

1. Food-delivery credit — ₹500–₹1,500. The most practical gift for anyone who just moved into a PG and has no kitchen. Send it as a voucher or a straight UPI transfer with "for dinners in week one" in the note. Bad at: feeling like a gift if you send it with no words.

2. A commute fix — ₹300–₹1,000. Metro card top-up, cab credit for the first week, or a decent umbrella if they're joining in Mumbai in July. Small, specific, noticed.

3. A water bottle or tumbler — ₹500–₹1,500. Every office desk needs one; most freshers carry a plastic bottle from the hostel. Bad at: nothing. Reliably used for years.

4. A laptop stand or a good mouse — ₹700–₹2,000. A desk upgrade they won't buy themselves until their back starts hurting in month three.

5. A notebook and a good pen — ₹400–₹1,200. For the induction weeks when they're writing down forty names and twelve acronyms. Old-fashioned, oddly loved.

6. A plant for the desk — ₹300–₹800. Delivered via a plant shop if the office allows it; otherwise to their flat. Bad at: surviving remote work, and people who travel.

The memorable shelf

7. A book you actually read in your first job — ₹300–₹700. Not a self-help bestseller — the one that genuinely helped you. Write on the inside cover why.

8. A letter from the family — ₹0. For a first job especially. Parents, grandparents, a sibling — a page each, photographed and sent, or posted to the PG address.

9. A team-signed card — ₹0–₹500. For a colleague leaving your company for theirs. Physical if you're all in office; a shared page or doc if not. (The farewell side of this has its own guide: farewell gift for a colleague.)

10. The Congrats on the New Job page — ₹49. The one we make. Details below.

The Congrats on the New Job page, floor by floor

Lovely's Congrats on the New Job template is built around the one feeling everyone has on joining day — going up — and it's literally an elevator.

  • The lobby. "Ground floor · day 001." A big "new job, who dis?" and a line with their name: "Riya starts today. the only way is up." They press ▲ going up.
  • The new badge. An ID card for the company you name ("the big league co."), with their photo, their name and their designation. They drag the badge to the card reader — BEEP! — and the screen reads "access granted. they let you in. bold move on their part."
  • The day-one checklist. An "onboarding.pdf, page 1 of 1" with a to-do list you write, three to six items. The defaults set the tone: "find the coffee machine," "nod at every acronym," "learn 40 names, forget 39," "first salary → treat us," "be brilliant (already done)," "never reply-all. ever." Below it, a progress bar: promotion loading.
  • The top floor. "Look at you go," their name in large type, and the sign-off: "they have no idea how lucky they are. we do. — your forever-unpaid hype team."

Every line is editable, the photos swap, and the stepper sets how many checklist items appear. About eight minutes to make, ₹49 once through Razorpay (UPI works), and a private link that opens in WhatsApp with no account on their side. It works just as well for a promotion — put the new title on the badge — which is why promotion congratulations messages points here too.

"The checklist is where the real advice goes," says Lovely's founder. "It's just disguised as a joke, so nobody feels lectured."

Pairing the two shelves

The combinations that work best are boringly simple:

  • Fresher moving to a PG: food credit (₹1,000) + the page sent the night before joining.
  • Sibling's first job: a laptop stand + a letter from each parent.
  • Partner switching companies: dinner out + the page on the morning of day one.
  • Colleague leaving your team: a team-signed card + a book with your note inside.
  • Friend abroad starting in London or Dubai: the page alone — nothing else arrives in time.

The honest cost table

| Gift | Cost | Arrives | Needs an address | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Food-delivery credit / UPI | ₹500–₹1,500 | Instantly | No | | Commute credit | ₹300–₹1,000 | Instantly | No | | Bottle, stand, notebook | ₹400–₹2,000 | 1–4 days | Yes | | Book with a note | ₹300–₹700 | 1–4 days | Yes | | Family letter | ₹0 | Instantly (photo) or by post | Optional | | Congrats on the New Job page | ₹49 one-time | Seconds | No |

What not to do

  • Don't gift something branded with their new company's logo. They'll get three of those in the induction kit.
  • Don't include a salary joke. Not in the card, not in the page.
  • Don't send it during work hours on day one. They're in induction; they'll skim it in a lift. Night before, or the evening after.
  • Don't give advice disguised as a gift — a "how to survive corporate" book to a fresher reads as "you won't."

If you're still choosing the words, first job wishes has a section for each moment from the offer letter to the first salary, and the new job congratulations bank covers switches and comebacks.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good new job gift I can send online?

Something useful in the first two weeks, plus something with your words in it. Food-delivery credit for a friend in a new PG, a good water bottle or laptop stand for the desk, or a book they'll actually read all arrive fast. Lovely's Congrats on the New Job page is ₹49 and arrives as a link.

How much should I spend on a new job gift?

For a friend or colleague, ₹300 to ₹1,500 is normal in India. For a sibling or your own child starting their first job, families often spend more, but the most-remembered gifts are rarely the most expensive. The message travelling with the gift matters more than the price tag.

When should I send a new job gift?

The evening before the joining date, or the morning of. The offer-day excitement has faded by then and first-day nerves have replaced it, so a gift that lands on that morning feels like support rather than applause.

What's a good new job gift for a colleague who is leaving?

A shared gift from the team — a book, a good pen, a plant for the new desk — with a card everyone signs. If the team is remote, a single page with everyone's lines in it does the same job without a courier.

What does the Congrats on the New Job page include?

An elevator ride in four scenes: a lobby marked "day 001", an ID badge with their name and designation that they drag to a card reader, a day-one checklist of three to six items you write ending on "promotion loading", and a top-floor finale. Photos and every line are editable, ₹49 one-time.
