Welcome Home

Make the arrival the surprise

Welcome Home

₹49

Waiting on their phone when they land: an arrivals board flipping to LANDED, a baggage belt of bags that each hold a message, a passport stamped 'welcome home', and a family front door that opens after three knocks.

TL;DR

The best welcome home surprises prove that home was waiting for them specifically — their food, their room, their people, their joke on a sign. Below are fourteen ideas sorted by when they happen (the landing, the arrival, the first evening), with rough costs, plus versions for a kid back from hostel, a partner after a trip, family flying in from abroad, and someone home from hospital. If you can't be at the gate, Lovely's ₹49 Welcome Home page is a little airport arrival waiting on their phone when they land.

First, match the surprise to the person

The same banner and balloons don't suit every homecoming.

  • The hostel kid (semester break, first trip home from college in Manipal or Kota): wants food, sleep, their own bed, and to be fussed over — but not interrogated about marks.
  • The partner after a trip: wants a clean flat, dinner sorted and you. Small and intimate beats big and public.
  • Family from abroad (first visit in two years from Dubai, Toronto or Sydney): jet-lagged, overwhelmed, about to be booked by every relative. The kindest surprise protects their first day.
  • Someone back from hospital: wants calm. Quiet, clean, organised. No crowds.

Keep that in mind as you pick from the list below.

The landing — before they're even out of the plane (3)

  1. A message waiting when they switch their phone on. Free. The aisle wait after landing is the loneliest five minutes of a journey and the easiest one to fill. For lines sized for that moment, welcome home messages has a full set, including the landing-message section.
  2. A welcome home page, timed for landing. ₹49. Send the link to arrive at touchdown — their own flight on an arrivals board, flipping to LANDED. Details below.
  3. A voice note from the family. Free. Everyone at home saying one line each, recorded the night before. Grandparents especially.

The arrival — at the gate or the door (5)

  1. A funny sign at arrivals. ₹50–₹200 for chart paper and markers. Skip "WELCOME HOME" in glitter; use an inside joke, a fake flight number, or "Uber for [nickname] — 4.9 stars, snacks included". It'll be the photo of the trip.
  2. The pet at the door. Free. If there's a dog, it's already the best welcome; give it a bandana with their name.
  3. Their favourite meal, ready on arrival. Cost of groceries. Not a feast for forty — their thing. Rajma-chawal, fish curry, Maa's aloo paratha. The smell when the door opens is the surprise.
  4. A welcome mat or a small banner. ₹200–₹600. Corny, and every family that does it photographs it.
  5. A house full of people — only if they'd love that. Free, but risky. Some people love a crowd at the door; jet-lagged NRIs and introverts often don't. Ask a sibling first.

The room and the first evening (6)

  1. Their room, upgraded. ₹300–₹1,500. Fresh sheets, fairy lights, the broken fan finally fixed, a framed photo they didn't know you had. The detail you fixed beats anything you added.
  2. A photo wall of the time they were away. ₹200–₹500 for prints. What happened at home while they were gone — the new scooter, the cousin's wedding, the dog's haircut — so they catch up without being told.
  3. A stocked fridge and cupboard. Their brand of everything. For an NRI, the things they can't get abroad: the right namkeen, the right pickle, Parle-G.
  4. A welcome kit on the bed. ₹300–₹800. A towel, a local SIM if they need one, chappals, a phone charger, a printed "itinerary" that says "Day 1: sleep. Day 2: eat. Day 3: maybe one relative."
  5. A protected first day. Free. Tell the relatives the visit schedule starts on day two. This is the single best gift for someone flying in from abroad.
  6. Recreate an old ritual. Free. The Sunday-morning jalebi run, the late-night terrace chai, the one show you all used to watch together. It tells them nothing important changed.

The rule across all fourteen: specific beats spectacular. One thing that could only be for them is worth more than five things that could be for anyone.

If you've got weeks before they arrive, a countdown to seeing them again turns the waiting itself into part of the welcome.

How the Welcome Home page works

Lovely's Welcome Home template is a short airport-to-doorstep story, played in about two minutes.

  • Arrivals board. "terminal 2 · home — local time: finally." A flight board with real-looking flights — 6E 2041 from Dubai, AI 0302 from London — and theirs: ♥ 0001, from their city. They tap check status and it flips: in the air → descending → at the gate → LANDED, as a little plane touches down. "passenger: [name]. carrying: one extra-tired face." / "wheels down. the whole house just stood up."
  • Baggage claim. "belt 07 — all bags are yours." Three to six bags roll past on the belt, each with a tag: fragile, heavy, overweight, priority, lost & found, handle with care. They tap each bag to grab it, and it opens a message: "the house was way too quiet without you." / "it's all the hugs we saved up." / "your room is exactly how you left it. messy." The trolley fills as they go.
  • Immigration. A passport from the republic of home, with their photo. Arriving from: "hostel life". Purpose of visit: "being missed". Duration: "forever, pls". They stamp it: welcome home — entry approved.
  • The front door. A door with your family's nameplate: knock knock — three times, it's the family rule. After the third knock it opens on a lamp-lit room and the family cheering: welcome home, [name] — "your spot on the couch is saved. chai's on." — signed by everyone.

Every flight, city, bag tag, message, passport field and the nameplate is editable. ₹49 one-time. It opens in any phone browser from a WhatsApp link; there's nothing to install.

"We put the real flights on the board for a reason," says Lovely's founder. "Every Indian family has stood at arrivals scanning for one flight number. Seeing theirs as ♥ 0001 is the moment people tell us they laughed in the aisle."

Timing the page

  • Flight: schedule it for landing. Watch the live status and send it the moment it says landed — it'll be the first thing on their screen when airplane mode goes off.
  • Train or bus: send it as they pull into the station.
  • You're picking them up: send it on the way to the airport, so they open it in the plane and walk out already smiling at you.
  • You can't be there: send it for landing, and have a family member put a printed QR code of the same link on their pillow.

Versions by person

For the hostel kid. Rewrite the bags as a family roast-and-hug: "your cupboard's empty because we used it", "Papa learnt UPI while you were away". Passport arriving from "Kota" or "Hostel C, room 214". Food at the door; no marks discussion till day three.

For the partner. Make the flight board yours alone, the bags private jokes, the door your flat number. Pair with dinner already ordered and the house clean.

For family from abroad. The page on landing, a quiet first day, the fridge stocked with things they can't get there, and a family photo wall of the two years they missed. Long-distance families often end up doing online surprises across the distance for years — the homecoming is the payoff.

After hospital. Skip the banner. A made bed, medicines in a labelled box, the window open, a simple meal, and the page — rewritten gently, with bags like "rest is the only plan" and "nobody's visiting today". The door can say "welcome home. we've got everything."

Mistakes that spoil a homecoming

  • Overbooking the first day. The surprise party at 8 pm after a 14-hour flight is for the hosts, not the traveller.
  • Making it about the gifts they brought. "What did you get?" at the door turns them into a delivery.
  • Interrogation disguised as welcome. Marks, salary, marriage plans — all can wait for at least a week.
  • Redecorating their room without asking. Upgrading is lovely; throwing out the old posters is not.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good welcome home surprise ideas?

A funny sign at arrivals, a welcome message waiting on their phone when they land, their room decorated with photos and fairy lights, their favourite home-cooked meal ready on arrival, and a stocked fridge. The best ones are about comfort and recognition — proof that home was waiting for them specifically.

How do I surprise someone at the airport?

Make a sign that's personal rather than generic — an inside joke or a fake flight number works better than "welcome home" in glitter. Check the flight status before leaving, wait near the exit rather than the drop-off lane, and send a message timed for when they switch their phone on after landing.

How can I welcome someone home if I can't be there?

Have something waiting: a meal delivered to arrive with them, a note on their bed through a family member, and a message or page timed for their landing. Lovely's Welcome Home template is a little airport arrival on their phone — their flight flips to LANDED, bags carry your messages, and a front door opens to the family.

What is a good welcome home surprise after a hospital stay?

A quiet one. A clean, freshly made bed, a room with good light, medicines organised in a labelled box, a simple favourite meal, and no visitors on the first day. Decorations and crowds can be overwhelming after hospital; calm and comfort are the surprise.

How much does the Welcome Home page cost?

Lovely's Welcome Home template is ₹49, one-time, paid by UPI, card or netbanking. Hosting is included and the link doesn't expire. They open it from a WhatsApp link in any phone browser, with no app or account.
