I'm So Proud of You

₹49

A certificate with their name on it, six medals for six specific reasons, a photo exhibit wall and a tap-to-clap standing ovation your dashboard counts afterwards. Usually sent to children — it works at full power pointed the other way.

TL;DR

Sixty original thank-you messages for parents, sorted by what you're actually thanking them for rather than by mood. The money they never mentioned. The career they let you choose. The time they were wrong and said so out loud. And the section nobody writes: how to thank a parent when the relationship is complicated and a warm blanket message would be a lie. Devanagari and romanized Hinglish sets at the end, every line tap-to-copy. If you take one thing from this page, take the rule in the next section.

Thank them for one thing, not everything

Every page you'll find on this query says a version of the same sentence: thank you for everything you have done for me, Mom and Dad.

It is a perfectly nice sentence and it does nothing, because "everything" has no edges. A parent reading it cannot picture anything. They say "achha achha" and put the phone down.

The messages parents keep are the ones with one specific item in them. The scooter that got sold in 2014. The coaching fees that went up and were never mentioned. The year the family trip quietly stopped happening. You almost certainly know one of these; you have probably known it for years and never said it out loud because there is no comfortable moment to.

That is the other useful thing about a written message: it removes the moment. Nobody has to look at anybody. Send it at 11 p.m., let them read it alone, and accept that the reply will be a deflection. "Ye sab kya hai" is not rejection. It's the only response the register allows.

The money they never mentioned (12)

The single most under-thanked thing in Indian families, because the whole convention is that it isn't discussed.

The career they let you choose (11)

Especially for parents who wanted something safer and stood down.

The time they were wrong and said so (10)

Rare, and worth marking. Parents who can do this deserve to know it registered.

When the relationship is complicated (10)

Nobody writes this section, so here it is. These are honest, narrow and sendable — no line here claims a closeness that isn't there.

देवनागरी — जब हिंदी में कहना हो (9)

Send it in the language they scold you in. That's the register feeling actually travels through.

Hinglish — short enough for a status (8)

Romanized reads best on WhatsApp: it renders instantly on every phone and needs no Hindi keyboard.

What not to send

  • A forwarded "parents are god" graphic. Recognisable in half a second as something that cost you nothing.
  • Anything that reads like a speech. If it has a greeting, a body and a conclusion, it belongs in a school assembly, not a WhatsApp chat.
  • Money as the message. A transfer with no words attached is a transaction. Send the words too.
  • A gratitude message that turns into a grievance halfway. Pick one; don't send a thank-you with a bill stapled to it.
  • A thank-you timed to a request. They'll spot it. Everyone spots it.

When a message isn't the right size

A text does the small version well. The problem with parents is that the honest version is usually a list — five or six specific things, none of which fits in one message and all of which would sound absurd said out loud at dinner.

If that's the shape of what you owe them, I'm So Proud of You is the closest thing we make to it, and it's genuinely better aimed at parents than at anyone else: a certificate with their names, six medals — six reasons, written by you — a photo exhibit and an ovation your dashboard counts afterwards, so you know they reached the end. ₹49 one-time, about eight minutes.

If you want the full walkthrough of what actually goes on a page like that — what to put in each section, what to leave out, and why the boring specifics beat the beautiful sentences — we wrote it up in a thank-you page for your parents. Read that before you start writing, not after.

"With parents, the general version gets a polite reply," says Ganesh, Lovely's founder. "The specific version gets a phone call."

Make it yours: the one edit

Every line above is generic on purpose. There's exactly one edit that makes it yours: swap the general noun for a specific one.

  • Generic: Aapne bahut kuch kiya.

  • Yours: Aapne apni scooty bech ke meri fees bhari thi.

  • Generic: Thank you for the things you quietly stopped buying.

  • Yours: You wore the same brown sweater to every winter function from 2011 to 2018. I have the photos.

The second version isn't better writing. It's evidence, and evidence is the only thing that gets past a parent's reflex to deflect. Spend ten minutes remembering rather than an hour looking for a better-worded line.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good thank you message for parents?

One that thanks them for a single specific thing instead of for everything. "Thank you for all you've done" is a category; "thank you for never once asking me why the fees went up" is a message. Indian parents in particular tend to deflect general gratitude and sit very still for the specific kind.

How do I thank my parents without it being awkward?

Send it in writing rather than saying it out loud, and keep it to two or three sentences. Most families have no spoken register for this, so a message avoids the moment where everyone looks at the floor. Expect a deflection in reply — "ye sab kya hai" is not rejection, it is embarrassment.

What do you write to thank parents for their sacrifices?

Name one sacrifice you actually witnessed rather than the idea of sacrifice. The scooter that was sold, the trip that stopped happening the year you started coaching, the phone that was never upgraded. Evidence is what turns a thank-you into something they keep.

What if my relationship with my parents is complicated?

Thank them for something narrow and true, and do not claim a closeness you do not feel. A message that says "we don't agree on much and you still paid for all of it" is honest and sendable, where a warm blanket message would feel false to both sides and probably would not get sent at all.

Should I send a thank you message to parents in Hindi or English?

Send it in the language they scold you in — that is the register they process feeling in. For most Indian families that means Hindi, and romanized Hinglish is the practical choice on WhatsApp because it renders on every phone. Devanagari is better for a card or something printed.
