TL;DR

55 original maafi lines for mummy and papa in Hindi, sorted by how serious it was: the everyday stuff (not calling back, snapping, forgetting to tell them), a real argument, and the heavy ones (a lie, months of distance, a decision they found out about from someone else). Devanagari for the message they will read twice, romanized Hinglish for the quick WhatsApp text. Tap to copy, add one specific detail, and read the honest section about the apologies that need a phone call home instead.

Why apologising to Indian parents is its own skill

In most Indian homes nobody models this. Parents apologise through actions — a favourite dish appearing at dinner — and children apologise by going quiet and then being unusually helpful for two days. Actual words are rare on both sides.

That is exactly why words work so well here. A plain, specific "maine galti ki, maaf kar dijiye" from a grown child is unfamiliar enough that most parents remember it for years.

Two rules before you copy anything. Apologise in the language of the house — an apology in Hindi from someone who usually texts in English reads as effort, not as formality. And do not attach your reason. The moment a "lekin" appears, they stop hearing the apology and start preparing their reply.

Tier 1 — roz ki chhoti galtiyan (14 lines)

Not calling back, forgetting to say you would be late, a sharp reply to a normal question, the phone in your hand at dinner.

Tier 2 — jab sach mein bahas ho gayi (13 lines)

The argument where the whole house went quiet. Something disrespectful said out loud. A door closed harder than it needed to be.

Tier 3 — jab baat badi thi (10 lines)

A lie that ran for months. A decision they heard about from a relative. A long stretch of not calling home. These deserve a call, not a forward — but a written line can open the door.

देवनागरी — the message they will read twice (10 lines)

Older parents read Devanagari more comfortably than romanized Hindi, and a Devanagari message on WhatsApp genuinely looks like a letter to them. Use these for the long message, a card, or the letter section of a page.

Hinglish one-liners — the quick WhatsApp text (8 lines)

If your parents are on WhatsApp all day (most are), romanized Hindi is what they will read fastest — and it is what you already type in. Short and unfussy is right here.

When a message isn't the apology

For tier 1 and most of tier 2, a message genuinely resolves it — especially if you are in a hostel in Kota or a PG in Pune and the alternative is another week of nothing.

For tier 3, it will not. A lie that ran for months, a decision they heard about from a chachi, or a year of not calling — those need your voice, and preferably your face. Send one line so the door opens, then call. Then, if you can, go home. Indian parents forgive through presence more than through paragraphs; the message is only how you announce that you are coming.

There is also the case where nobody is fully wrong — the classic career or marriage disagreement where both sides feel let down. A pure apology fits that badly, because half of what needs saying is "I understand why you reacted that way". Lovely's Hey, It's Okay template is built for exactly that shape at ₹49: an "i see u" check-in, chat-bubble understanding, a chapter where both sides get to be sorry, and a fresh-page restart. If you would rather build a plain apology page and put your letter in it, we wrote how to make a sorry page step by step.

"The family pages are the ones people are most nervous about sending and most glad they sent," says Lovely's founder. "A lot of Indian parents have never received an apology in writing from their child. It becomes a thing they show people."

For the longer, essay-shaped version of this conversation — what actually changes when you apologise to your parents as an adult — read how to apologise to your parents from a grown-up perspective. This page is the message bank; that one is the thinking behind it. And if the distance has run into years, how to apologise after a long silence has a letter template built for it.

Make it yours: four small edits

  • Use Mummy, Papa, Amma, Baba — whatever you actually call them. The generic version is the forwardable version.
  • Name one specific thing. "Sorry ki maine aapke doston ke saamne aisa bola" is an apology. "Sorry for everything" is a mood.
  • Add a time. "Shaam ko call karta hoon" turns the message into a plan.
  • Wrong day, right instinct? If what you actually owe them is a thank-you rather than an apology, their anniversary is the better occasion for it — 65 mummy papa anniversary wishes in Hindi is the bank for that day, written in the same voice as this page.
  • What NOT to do: do not send the apology in the family group. Putting a parent's reaction in front of relatives is a second offence. And do not attach your explanation — send it, let it sit, and give the reason later if they ask for it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good sorry message for parents in Hindi?

One that names the thing without a defence attached. "Maine aapse oonchi awaaz mein baat ki — woh galat tha, maaf kar dijiye" works because Indian parents rarely get a clean apology from their children; they get explanations. The clean version is what surprises them.

Should I apologise to my parents in Hindi or English?

In whichever language they scolded you in, which for most Indian families is Hindi or the mother tongue. An apology in the language of the household lands as sincerity; an apology in polished English can accidentally read like distance, especially with an older parent.

How do I say sorry to my mother after shouting at her?

Say it plainly, in person if you are in the same house, and do not bundle it with a reason. "Mummy, maine aawaz oonchi ki, woh galat tha" is enough. Then do something ordinary together — tea, a walk, sitting in the same room — because Indian mothers usually accept apologies through presence rather than through words.

My parents never say sorry to me. Should I still apologise?

Yes, if you did something you regret. Apologising is not a score you are losing — it is one person choosing to stop the standoff. It also tends to change the temperature of the house faster than waiting for a matching apology that may never come.

What if the disagreement is about my career or my relationship?

Apologise for how you handled it, not for the decision itself. "Sorry ki maine aapko chhupa kar bataya" is honest; "sorry ki maine yeh chuna" is a promise you cannot keep. Separating the two is what makes the conversation continue instead of ending.
