TL;DR

A short birthday wish done right is one sentence that still points at the person. Below are 90 short birthday wishes — one-liners for friends, family, colleagues, partners, plus Hinglish and Devanagari sections — each under a couple of dozen words and each built to carry one personal detail. The formula: short line + one specific touch + (optionally) something small they can open, like a ₹19 animated birthday card page. Short doesn't mean lazy; it means edited.

Why short beats long (most of the time)

The average person with a normal social life sends 20–30 birthday wishes a year — cousins, colleagues, school groups, society groups. Nobody writes 30 essays, and nobody should. The one-liner is the honest format for most relationships: it gets read fully, it doesn't demand a matching reply, and on a busy birthday it respects the queue.

The trap is autopilot. "Happy birthday, have a blast 🎂" is a wish written by muscle memory, and everyone can tell. Every line below is short and aimed — and each has a slot for the one detail that makes it yours. When someone deserves more than any one-liner can hold, that's what a digital birthday gift is for.

For friends (12)

For family (12)

For colleagues and acquaintances (10)

Polish over intimacy — friendly, not familiar.

Sweet, for someone special (10)

Funny one-liners (12)

Hinglish one-liners (16)

The WhatsApp naturals — short enough for a status, warm enough for a chat.

Devanagari one-liners (10)

Micro-wishes: five words or fewer (8)

For the reply window, the story sticker, the cake box note.

The short-wish-plus-small-gift trick

Here's the honest maths of the 20-wishes-a-year problem: you can't write essays for everyone, but for the eight or ten people who matter, "HBD 🎂" feels wrong too. The middle path Lovely users have settled on: send the short wish, then follow it with a small page they can open.

The Birthday Gift template is built exactly for this — an animated card with drop-in "Happy Birthday" text, balloons, their photo and a letter that opens with a click. Four minutes to make, ₹19, sent as a link right under your one-liner. The wish stays short; the effort is in the attachment. For someone closer, the same trick scales up to a full birthday page.

"Short wishes aren't the lazy option — they're the honest one for most relationships," says Lovely's founder. "The magic combo we see is a one-line wish plus a small personalized card page. Ten seconds to read, but somebody clearly made something for you."

More send-tonight options are in our digital birthday gift ideas.

What NOT to do with a short wish

  • Don't send bare "HBD". Three letters isn't a wish, it's an attendance mark.
  • Don't copy-paste the same line to five people in one group. They will compare notes. They always compare notes.
  • Don't add "sorry for the short message". Short is fine; apologising for it makes it weird.
  • Don't use 🎂🎉🥳 as the entire message. Emojis season a wish; they aren't one.
  • Don't send it at 11:47 PM the next day. A short wish on time beats a long one late.

Make it yours: the one-edit rule

Add exactly one specific detail to any line above: their city ("May Pune traffic part for you today"), their chai order, the exam they cleared, the trip they're planning. One-liners have one job — proving you aimed before you fired. A single named detail is the proof.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good short birthday wish?

One sentence with one specific touch: "Happy birthday — may this year be as generous to you as you are to everyone else." Short works when it still points at the person; "Happy birthday, have a great day" points at nobody.

How do I make a short birthday wish feel personal?

Attach one detail only you'd know: their chai order, their city, their latest win. "Happy birthday! May Bengaluru traffic part for you today" is seven words longer than "HBD" and a hundred times warmer.

What's a short birthday wish for someone I'm not close to?

Warm and generic-graceful: "Happy birthday! Wishing you a really good year ahead." For colleagues and acquaintances, polish beats intimacy — you want friendly, not familiar.

Are one-line birthday wishes okay to send on WhatsApp?

Completely — most birthday wishes on WhatsApp are one-liners, and for good reason: they get read fully. Save the paragraph for the closest people, and pair the one-liner with a voice note or a small personalized page when you want to show extra effort.

What can I add to a short birthday wish to make it stand out?

Send the line, then follow with something they can open: a photo memory, a voice note, or a small animated birthday card page with their name and photo. The wish stays short; the effort shows up in the attachment.
