TL;DR
An Onam greeting card online can be more than a picture of a pookalam. Lovely's Happy Onam template lets the person do Onam: tap to light the five wicks of a nilavilakku, lay a pookalam ring by ring (each ring reveals a line you wrote), serve a sadya on a banana leaf dish by dish, tap fast to row a chundan vallam to victory, and land on their name with "ഓണാശംസകൾ". ₹49 one-time, about five minutes to make, opens from WhatsApp with no app. Below: what each screen does and what to write on it.
Why a card isn't quite Onam
Onam is a festival of doing. You light the nilavilakku. You add a ring to the pookalam every morning from Atham. You serve the sadya in its order — and you're scolded if the payasam comes too early. You cheer the boat. The holiday is made of small actions done together.
That's what a static e-card misses, and why it misses hardest for the people who can't be there: the nurse in Riyadh, the student in Manchester, the parents in Kozhikode whose children are now in three different cities. A card tells them it's Onam. A page they can light, lay and serve gives them a few minutes of Onam itself, with your words inside it.
What the page does, scene by scene
- The lamp. "maveli is coming home." A large "Onam" title, "ഓണാശംസകൾ", and a brass nilavilakku with five wicks. They tap each wick to light it (or tap "light all five"), and the screen warms as the lamp glows.
- The pookalam. "one ring at a time." A flower carpet with your photo at the centre. Each tap lays the next ring of flowers and shows one of your lines. You choose three to six rings.
- The sadya. "sit. eat. no diet today." A banana leaf. Each tap of "serve" places the next dish in order with its caption: a pinch of salt, banana chips, puli inji, avial, pappadam, rice and sambar, and payasam — followed by a photo of someone napping, "after the payasam".
- The vallam kali. "tap fast to row. beat the other chundan." Two snake boats on the river under palm trees. They tap "row!" as fast as they can while the rowers' chant pops up — "thithi thara, thithithai" — until "we won! trophy goes home with us. obviously."
- The finale. A small pookalam with a photo in the middle, "happy onam," their name, your closing line ("may your year be as full as a sadya leaf, and as bright as the pookalam."), "ഓണാശംസകൾ" and your sign-off.
Every line is editable, and so are the photos.
Writing the pookalam lines
Each ring is named for a flower, and the default lines tie each flower to a trait — a format that's easy to keep:
| Ring | Default line | | --- | --- | | Thumba | "thumba: small, white, and the most important. like you." | | Marigold | "marigold: loud, bright, always first to arrive." | | Chethi | "chethi: you, every time i'm having a bad day." | | Jamanthi | "jamanthi: the plans we make and actually keep." | | Vadamalli | "vadamalli: that one evening walk. you know." | | Leaves | "leaves: for the patience you've had with me." |
Thumba coming first is a nice touch to keep — the small white thumba flower is traditionally the heart of the pookalam, associated with Maveli's welcome. How to write your own:
- Keep the "flower: trait" shape. It makes six short lines feel like a set.
- One private reference. "vadamalli: that one evening walk. you know." works because it's a secret. Put yours in.
- Under twelve words each. The lines appear over the flower carpet; short reads better.
- Five rings is the sweet spot. Six if every line is strong.
For more raw lines in English, Malayalam and Hindi, the happy Onam wishes bank has 60.
Writing the sadya captions
Seven dishes, seven captions, each a bold dish name with a short line under it — "banana chips / i'll steal half. you know this." and "payasam / …and then the nap. obviously." This screen is where the jokes live. Rules:
- Keep the dish names. They're the order of the leaf, and Malayali readers will notice if payasam comes before sambar.
- Make the captions about the two of you. "avial / every vegetable, no drama. goals." could be "avial / like our family group: everyone in, nobody agrees."
- Swap the nap photo. By default it's a sleepy GIF. A real photo of someone asleep after lunch is funnier.
Choosing the photos
There are three photo spots: the centre of the pookalam, the after-sadya nap, and the little pookalam on the finale. Use one old photo (a childhood Onam, a kasavu-clad group shot), one funny one, and one recent one of you together for the finale. Faces in the centre — the pookalam frames are round.
The steps, start to finish
- Open the Happy Onam template and tap create. Sign in with email or Google.
- Edit the first screen — the "for…" line with their name.
- Write the pookalam lines and choose the number of rings (3–6).
- Rewrite the sadya captions.
- Swap the three photos.
- Edit the boat-race win line and the finale — name, line, sign-off. Malayalam displays normally.
- Preview on your phone, then pay ₹49 once via Razorpay — UPI, card or netbanking.
- Send the link or QR on Atham, Uthradam evening or Thiruvonam morning.
Honest cost table
| Route | Upfront | Recurring | Time | They take part | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Happy Onam on Lovely | ₹49 one-time | ₹0 | ~5 min | Yes — light, lay, serve, row | | Custom domain add-on | +₹100 one-time | ₹0 | +2 min | — | | Free online greeting card | ₹0 | ₹0 | 10–20 min | No — a static image | | Forwarded pookalam photo | ₹0 | ₹0 | 5 sec | No | | Onam kit by courier (kasavu, chips, payasam mix) | ₹800–3,000 | — | 3–10 days abroad | They unpack it |
If you're couriering an Onam kit to the Gulf, the page and the box go well together: print the QR code and tuck it in with the banana chips. The guide to occasion pages for parents abroad has more on pairing a page with a parcel across time zones.
Who it's for
- A Malayali far from Kerala. The single most common Onam page — the friend in Dubai, the sister in Bengaluru, the cousin in Houston.
- Parents whose children are scattered. Make one page with lines from each sibling, and send it to the family group.
- A non-Malayali partner's first Onam with your family. The sadya captions double as a gentle guide to the leaf.
- A Malayali friend, from you — not Malayali. It says you know the festival is more than a holiday.
What NOT to do
- Don't leave the placeholder name. Check the first screen and the finale.
- Don't reorder the sadya. The serving order is part of the point.
- Don't send it after Thiruvonam. The festival has ended by then; Atham to Thiruvonam is the window.
- Don't rewrite everything in Malayalam you can't read. One correct "Onashamsakal" beats ten guessed lines.
- Don't skip the vallam. It's the fun screen — tell them to tap fast.
When a card isn't enough
"Onam pages get opened twice," says Lovely's founder. "Once on the phone, and once on the TV at the family lunch, with everyone shouting at whoever's rowing."
Most of your contacts will be happy with a line on WhatsApp — the 60 Onam wishes cover that. The page is for the few people who are missing the sadya this year, or who you'd like to feel the festival came to them. And if you're comparing Onam with the other regional harvest festivals — Pongal, Lohri, Sankranti — our regional harvest greeting guide covers the etiquette for each.
Frequently asked questions
How do I send an Onam greeting card online?
Use a greeting page instead of a static image. On Lovely, open the Happy Onam template, write your lines for the pookalam and the sadya, add a few photos and publish. In about five minutes you get a link and a QR code that opens in any phone browser from WhatsApp.
What happens on the Happy Onam greeting page?
Five scenes: they tap to light the five wicks of a brass nilavilakku, lay a pookalam ring by ring with each ring revealing one of your lines, serve a sadya on a banana leaf dish by dish, tap fast to row a chundan vallam past the rival boat, and finish on their name with "ഓണാശംസകൾ".
How much does an online Onam greeting cost?
Lovely's Happy Onam template costs ₹49 one-time, paid by UPI, card or netbanking. There is no subscription, hosting is included, and an optional custom domain is a ₹100 add-on.
Can I write the Onam greeting in Malayalam?
Yes. Every line is editable and Malayalam script displays normally, so you can write the pookalam lines, the sadya captions and the finale in Malayalam, English or both. The template already shows "ഓണാശംസകൾ" on the first and last screens.
Is an online Onam greeting good for family in the Gulf or abroad?
It is one of the best uses for it. The page works anywhere with a phone browser, so a parent in Kochi can send it to a son in Dubai, or a friend in Bengaluru to family in Kottayam. Send it the evening before Thiruvonam in their time zone so it is waiting in the morning.
