TL;DR

Sixty farewell messages for college friends — for the group chat on the last day, for the hostel roommate whose side of the room is now empty, for the photo dump, and for the classmate you never quite got close enough to. Plus Devanagari and Hinglish sections. This is written for a whole batch scattering at once, not for one friend moving away, and there's an honest bit at the end about what actually happens to a group chat after August.

The last day is a different kind of goodbye

Most farewell writing on the internet is about one person leaving — a friend taking a job in another city while your life stays roughly where it was. That's a hard thing, and it has a shape: one departure, one gap, one set of rituals to rebuild. If that's your situation, messages for a best friend moving away is the page for it.

The last day of college is not that. Everybody leaves. Nobody is left behind to hold the fort, because there is no fort — the canteen closes for you all on the same afternoon. Forty people who saw each other daily for four years scatter to Hyderabad, Chennai, Indore, Dubai, and a village in Latur, and by October the group chat that produced two hundred messages a day is producing four.

That's why the good farewell messages from this week are unsentimental and extremely specific. Nobody needs a paragraph about the passage of time. They need somebody to name the third-floor stairwell, and the exact 2 am, and the person who always brought the Maggi.

Twelve for the group chat on the last day

Send yours early, before forty people start typing at once. Short and concrete beats long and beautiful in a chat this loud.

Ten for the roommate whose side of the room is now empty

The hostel or PG roommate is a specific relationship — you shared a room, a fan, a bathroom queue and every bad night for years, and now there's a stripped mattress on the other side.

Ten captions for the last-day photo dump

Under ten words, one concrete noun. That's the whole formula.

Eight for the classmate you never got close enough to

Nobody writes these and everybody receives one and remembers it for a decade. Four years is long enough to like someone properly without ever having become friends, and the last day is the only honest moment to say so.

देवनागरी — ten lines for a card or a long message

Hindi carries farewell without embarrassment, which English at nineteen usually cannot. Use these for a signed card, a long message, or the closing note on a page. Each line copies with both scripts.

Hinglish — ten for a status or a story

Romanized Hindi is what the batch group chat actually speaks in, and it fits a story sticker without wrapping.

What actually happens to the group chat

Worth being honest about, because everyone on the last day promises the same thing and the promise mostly doesn't survive.

Roughly this: for six weeks the chat stays loud. Then the joining dates arrive and the messages become updates rather than jokes. By the second Diwali it's birthdays and one meme a week. By year three there are six people left who actually talk, and they're the six people you'd have guessed on day one.

That is a completely normal outcome and not a betrayal by anyone. A forty-person group chat was never the friendship — it was the building. The friendship is the six, and the six survive if two of them keep a ritual going: a standing call, a shared album, a rule that memes count as contact. Long-distance friendship messages and how to stay close is the practical version of that, and it is more useful in November than any farewell line is in June.

The other thing that happens is that people start winning — first jobs, first salaries, the exam that finally clears. When that starts, proud-of-you messages for a best friend is a better bank than anything on this page.

Make it yours: the one edit

Every line above has one slot for a real noun, and the real noun is what makes people screenshot it.

"Block C, third floor" becomes your block. "The canteen" becomes the specific stall and the specific order. "Four years" becomes the years, written out, because 2022–2026 hits harder than "four years" ever does. "That one night" becomes the night, named badly, the way you'd name it out loud.

When a message isn't the size of four years

The genuine problem with a last-day message is that it's a paragraph for something that took four years, and it disappears into a chat with two hundred unread messages in it.

The alternative most batches land on is one page, made by one person, sent to everyone: you & me — an ongoing story at ₹49. It's a long-scroll timeline — up to fifteen dated entries, one photo and a caption each, an optional paragraph where a moment deserves it, plus a gallery and running stats. Fill it with the four years in order: the first-week photo where nobody knows each other, the trip that went wrong, the night before the final exam, the last day. About twelve minutes of work, and drafts save, so you can collect photos from the group over a week and finish it later.

It works for a batch for the same reason it works for a couple: a scattered group has no shared drive and no shared phone, and a link is the only object all forty people can keep. A website for my best friend walks through the smaller, one-person version of the same idea — what goes on it and what it costs.

"The pages people make at the end of college aren't really goodbyes," says Ganesh, Lovely's founder. "They're an index. Everyone's memory of those years is partial, and the page is the only place the whole thing exists in order."

Frequently asked questions

What is a good farewell message for college friends?

One that names a specific place rather than a feeling. "Goodbye everyone, we had a great time" is what a notice board says. "Block C, third floor, the stairwell where we ate at 2 am" is what a person says, and it's the one people screenshot on the last day.

What do you write in a college group chat on the last day?

Something short, specific and slightly funny, sent before everyone else floods it. Long emotional paragraphs get lost in a chat with forty people typing at once; one line naming a real moment and a real person gets read. Save the paragraph for individual DMs that night.

How do you say goodbye to college friends without it sounding fake?

Be honest about proportion. Not everyone in a batch was your person, and pretending otherwise is what makes farewell messages sound hollow. Write warmly and generally to the batch, and write specifically to the six people who actually shaped your three or four years.

What is a short farewell caption for college friends?

Under ten words with one concrete noun in it. "Same batch, different cities, same group chat" works. "End of an era" does not, because eleven other people in your feed will post it the same afternoon.

What can I make for my college friends instead of a message?

A timeline page. Lovely's Journey template is ₹49 — a long-scroll story with up to fifteen dated entries, one photo and a caption each, plus running stats. For a batch that's about to scatter it works as a shared save file: the four years in order, on one link nobody has to keep a copy of.
